Strathaven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strathaven (pronounced: Stra'ven [ˈstɹeɪvn̩], meaning: valley of the Avon) is a small town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland.
The origins of Strathaven Castle are obscure, but it is believed to have been built around 1350 by the Bairds, on a bend of the Powmillon Burn.
Strathaven became a Burgh of barony in 1450, and still retains its traditional character despite the growth of more modern housing satisfying the needs of commuters to Glasgow.

Strathaven is a town of population 6300, located in the county of South Lanarkshire, approximately 20 miles from Glasgow.
The name Strathaven comes from the Celtic words Strath (valley) and Avon (river or stream), as it is built close to the valley of the river Avon, and the Powmillon Burn, which joins up with the Avon, runs through the town, and was used to power the Town Mill.
Strathaven is between 600 and 700 feet above sea level, although the surrounding countryside is slightly higher, meaning Strathaven lies in a sort of bowl.

Strathaven grew largely on the weaving industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, and many of today's shops and residences were once weavers' mills and cottages.
