Strathclyde (Srath Chluaidh in Gaelic) was one of the regional council areas of Scotland from 1975 to 1996.
Strathclyde Region was named after the Kingdom of Strathclyde, which covered broadly the same area (with the significant exceptions of Argyll, Bute and Arran.
Strathclyde was a Brythonic kingdom, while Argyll was the heartland of the (Irish) Scottish kingdom of Dalriada having been taken over, probably from Picts.

Towards the middle of the 8th century Strathclyde was again threatened by an alliance between the Northumbrian~ and Picts, and in 750 the Northumbrian king Eadberht wrested from them a considerable part of their territories in the west including I~yle in Ayrshire.
In 94546 Strathclyde was ravaged by King Edmund and given over to the Scottish king Malcolm I. The fall of the kingdom was only temporary, for we hear of a defeat of the Scottish king Cuilean by the Britons in 971.
In the 11th century Strathclyde appears to have been finally incorporated in the Scottish kingdom, and the last time we hear of one of its kings is at the battle of Carham in 1018 when the British king Owen fought in alliance with Malcolm II.

 Kings of Strathclyde
One of the kingdoms of Scotland that arose at the end of the Roman occupation of Britain was that of Strathclyde.
The sub-kings of Strathclyde were as follows:- Donald mac Aed (908-925); Eoghain Caesarius mac Donald (925-937); Donald mac Aed (937-943); two sons of Donald (943-946); Indulf mac Constantine (946-954); Dub mac Malcolm (954-962); Donald mac Eoghain (962-975); Malcolm mac Donald (975-997); Eoghain the Bald mac Donald (997-1018) and Duncan mac Malcolm(1018-1034).
In 1034, the Kingdom of Strathclyde was formally merged with that of Alba, and Scotland was formally born, albeit at this time without the Western Isles and the Orkneys and Shetland which were still under Norse rule.

In 945, King Edmund of Wessex defeated Strathclyde and awarded it to King Malcolm of Scotland; however, Scotland did not permanently absorb the kingdom until the 11th cent.
The reason for the disappearance of the ancient British language and culture in the kingdoms is not definitely known.

The aim of the group is to restore old fire appliances and items of firefighting equipment and to maintain a collection of artifacts and memorabilia relating to the history of firefighting within Strathclyde.
The Preservation Group attends events throughout Strathclyde ranging from vintage vehicle rallies to fire station open days and recently took part in the 60th Anniversary Commemoration of the Clydebank Blitz.

Figures show 37 people died in fires in the Strathclyde area in 2004/05 and 26 of those were house fires.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said in a new report it was determined to slash the number of fire deaths and sever the link between house fires and alcohol.
