Strathcona county was designated as a Specialized Municipality on Jan 01, 1996, in order to accommodate the specific needs of an area that includes both urban and rural territory
County status was subsequently revoked in 1995 when the County Act was repealed by the provincial legislature, but was quickly returned in 1996 when the County of Strathcona #20 officially changed its name to Strathcona County and received Specialized Municipality status

Strathcona County Fire Fighters Local 2461 is a member of the International Association of Fire Fighters, representing 94 members of Strathcona County Emergency Services.
The County's area of 1268 square kilometres includes the urban centre of Sherwood Park and a surrounding rural area with rural hamlets, acreage developments, farms and significant industrial applications.

The County has since refused to buy out the residents and the residents are experiencing difficulty selling their properties.
In 2000, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (AEUB) recommended that a Shell Canada expansion should not take place and would not recommend further industry into the area until 24 residents who were in similar circumstances were relocated.

This paper presents the COTRIS system that is used to track traffic collisions, traffic volumes and road conditions in Strathcona County, Alberta.
County staff were frustrated with the lack of accuracy on the pin map.Sometimes they weren’t sure if the collision was supposed to have occurred in the centre of the intersection but had been moved to the side because there were too many pins in the middle of the intersection.
