		Strathkelvin & Bearsden was created in 1983 with 66% of its voters from Dunbartonshire East, 27% from North Lanarkshire and 8% from Stirlingshire West.
		In the successive parliamentary seats of Dunbartonshire East and Strathkelvin and Bearsden, the fortunes of the four main parties have ebbed and flowed in a totally unpredictable manner.
		It was another wise move by a sitting Labour MP as Strathkelvin was won by Conservative Michael Hirst with a majority of 3,700 over the Liberal-Alliance's Ron Waddell.

		Dr Jean Turner, a retired doctor, won the Strathkelvin and Bearsden seat on the outskirts of Glasgow from Brian Fitzpatrick after fighting a campaign to save Stobhill Hospital, which was threatened with drastic downgrading.
		Dr Turner, 63, took 10,988 votes, more than 31 per cent of the poll, beating Mr Fitzpatrick into second place with a majority of 38 votes and slashing his share of the vote by more than 20 per cent.
		Strathkelvin and Bearsden was a safe seat for Labour under Sam Galbraith’s parliamentary reign from 1987, but his decision to retire, combined with Greater Glasgow Health Board’s plans for hospital rationalisation, including the downgrading of Stobhill, changed the dynamic throwing up a by-election with a difference.

		The trend definitely seems to be towards the SSP and allied groups (they didn't stand in Falkirk East or Strathkelvin) - the swing is coming from Labour and the SNP.
		When the regional list votes come in, things could get very interesting - they're not counted until tomorrow, I think.
