Strathspey (dance) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The strathspey step is a slower and more stately version of the skip-change step used for jigs and reels.

 bobdunsire.com forums - 2006: Jig vs Strathspey
While noodling around with some Jigs and Strathspeys it occurred to me that S’peys, while written in 4/4 time, are functionally 12/8 due to their heavy reliance on triplet-based rhythms.
Strathspeys are very interesting and if you listen to a solo piper play then they are very dot regimented with a ridgid dot cut or cut dot pulse and the 4 feel is very defined.
The morale or the story being, strathspey must be played differently with a presence on "one" and the jig has to have a 3 feel.
