Similar societies are found not only in Scotland but also in Nova Scotia, Australia and throughout the United States.
Strathspeys and reels are two of the most distinctive forms of Scottish traditional music performed in ensembles of fiddles and supporting instruments.
Society members are amateur enthusiasts and performers of Scottish fiddle music to include the dance tunes used to accompany Scottish traditional dancing as well as the airs and marches included in the repertoire of traditional Scottish fiddlers.

Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society - History
The Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society was formed in 1932 and has had 6 conductors since then.
Sandy Milne was the third conductor of the Society and a great enthusiast who did much to keep the society going and to put the society in the public eye.
The Society draws its members from a wide area Banchory, Ballater, Aboyne, Tarland, Huntly, Aberdeen, Culter and Kintore and I am sure that by their efforts all that is best in Scottish music is kept to the fore.

Sandy Cooper - Banchory Strathspey and Reel Society
The society was then formed and the first conductor of it was a James Cruickshank, a railway station master; then came James Forbes, Sandy Milne, Mary Milne and Sandy Cooper himself.
Despite his other commitments, he was often asked to stand in for fiddlers in the society who were unable to attend performances – such as those working at the harvest.
Part of the ethos of the society was to preserve the traditional style of bowing, including the "one down three up" and the bowing used for playing the "Scottish snap".

 Strathspey and Reel Societies
In Orkney we have the West Mainland Strathspey and Reel Society and The Orkney Strathspey and Reel Society.
Another problem is that many of these societies are very undemocratic and the leader usually imposes a benign dictorship.
This is the seventieth anniversary of the society and much of the music this year will have been composed by or dedicated to the late William McPherson, the well known local composer and fiddler.

I've noticed since Strathspeys have had a new lease of popularity among Irish musicians that there are different (often very different) Strathspeys popular at irish sessions than Scottish ones, and often different versions.

Once I've heard a strathspey a couple of times, or played through it likewise if it's one I'm learning off the dots, I can feel in advance where the snaps are going to come in.

The Society’s success owed much to the influence of Sir Alexander Grant of Monymusk who was an admirer and patron of all forms of music.
There is a fair body of evidence to suggest that originally strathspey was a style of playing rather than a specific type of tune or dance.
The term strathspey-reel was often used to describe a reel played in a particular fashion employing a dsitinctive rhythm which is often called by today’s fiddlers the Scottish Snap.

Whether or not the fiddlers of his native Scotland inspired him, the music you probably heard was traditional folk music, consisting of two basic types of pieces: a reel, an uptempo piece for a lively Scottish dance of the same name, and a strathspey, slower-tempo dance music.
Many fiddle orchestras in Scotland (most cities have their own) list themselves as strathspey and reel societies.
The Glasgow Strathspey and Reel Society (44-1505 813-399), the orchestra's traditional name, is 110 years old.

Zanre appears to favour the approach of Slow air, march, strathspey and reel format which is the sort of thing you will hear in Fiddle & Accordian Club competitions etc. This, and the expected technique/playing style, is what he would describe as being traditional.
The tunes that you are required to play (such as 2/4 pipe marches, 4/4 marches, strathspeys, hornpipes, slow strathspeys, slow airs etc) have already been created by exponents of the music who are/were fully versed in traditional techniques.
All this reminds me that for many years the Edinburgh Highland Strathspey and Reel Society refused to play any music by Scott Skinner as it was "too modern".

Typical of this school of playing, her repertoire is heaviest in Strathspeys - originally a regional style of playing reels in the north-east, but seized on as the most distinctively Scottish (or rather non-English and non-Irish) of the native dance forms - closely followed by Reels.
As in Scotland, the tunes are invariably played in sets with the classic strathspey and reel set predominating - no bad thing, for while her her rendering of jigs, marches, airs etc is always excellent there is something truly special about her strathspey and reel playing.

Rideout inherited her love of music from her mother, who played piano, and her father, who played ocarina.
Inspired by Scottish fiddler, Dr. John Turner, Rideout moved to Scotland where she played with several strathspey and reel societies.
