Bale stacking is often done in community "bale raisings", where family and friends pitch in together to raise the walls in a weekend or two.
Straw bales have been used to insulate the floor from the slab, or to provide subgrad perimeter insulation, but this must be done with care, due to the importance of isolating the bales from undue moisture.
The theoretical R-value (thermal resistivity) for a 16.5 inch (420 mm) straw bale was calculated by Joseph McCabe as 52 (RSI-9.2).

Straw bale are traditionally a waste product which farmers do not till under the soil, but do sell as animal bedding or landscape supply due to their durable nature.
Two basic styles of straw bale construction have been used: post and beam construction with straw bale infill, and structural straw bale construction or "Nebraska" style (the weight of the roof is supported by the bales).
Bales are anchored to each other when stacked by stakes of wood (1x2x36), rebar (#3 or #4) or bamboo that penetrate at least two bales.

R-value measurements of straw bales were made in 1993 by Joseph McCabe as part of a Master’s thesis at the University of Arizona, and by R.U. Acton, P.E. of Sandia National Laboratories in May, 1994.
He noted that the early Nebraska bale houses never used a vapor retarder of any kind and moisture is not known to have been a problem, but he added that these houses often had outdoor privies and used wood stoves, which maintained quite dry conditions on the interior.

I found that because it covered information about straw bale construction from start to finish it couldn't go into as much detail about any one aspect as much as I would have liked.
In fact, bales and other "natural", low-cost building materials can yield attractively individual results in part because they are easy and fun to work with, enfranchising the future owner to be his or her own designer and builder.

We feel that the presence of a straw bale building would enhance our campus, show leadership in alternate construction methods, provide a learning experience and promote Trent as an environmental leader.
