Strawberry Switchblade were classic New Pop; categorised by most alongside Howard Jones, but in truth belonging to the Morley defined elite.
Strawberry Switchblade went way beyond snobbish elitism, and when 'Since Yesterday' finally hit the charts in the January lull, we were the ones cheering loudest.
Strawberry Switchblade never made a record for Creation, though there was a lot of talk and hopes.

Strawberry Switchblade: album reviews and ratings
For those who had the contradictory mix of self-consciousness and passion, of insecurity and fervour, the awkward, delicate, fragile confusion and paradox of bittersweet happy-sad pop was there.".
Bright and unprejudiced, they twitter with their harmonic beat like butterflies over a meadow; and in doing so, touch not only on the fresh harmonies of the 60's (Mamas and Papas) but also on the insouciant, sparsely-instrumented music of early Velvet Underground.
The songs on Strawberry Switchblade bloom melodically, cheekily, childishly and rampant on the pulsating field of a complex beat instrumentation, whereby melancholy ballads in orotund pop clothing (with strings and oboes) alternate with quicker dance numbers (in the style of their hit 'Since Yesterday').

For a moment it feels like being back in the early '80s, but fear not, we're not in a time capsule, but at Glasgow's CCA where an unusual Telstar Ponies gig is taking place.
Unusual because the act opening the gig is ex-Strawberry Switchblade and later Circle/Current 93/Psychic Tv/Death in June/Coil collaborator (and member of Sorrow and Spell with Boyd Rice!) Rose McDowall.
The '80s seem far away right now since the songs she plays are not the sugary poptastic wee gems that rewarded Strawberry Switchblade with fame and a Smash Hits cover.

Strawberry Switchblade : Since Yesterday - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Since Yesterday is basically an extended version of Strawberry Switchblade's 1985 self-titled debut.
It doesn't change the fact that Strawberry Switchblade is a band that people will either love or hate; the little-girl harmonies of Rose McDowall and Jill Bryson repelled as many listeners as they attracted during the '80s.
Strawberry Switchblade was already a fine LP, but Since Yesterday adds their hard-to-find cover of Dolly Parton's "Jolene." The ladies transform the country classic into a club favorite with pulsating disco keyboards; it is irresistibly cute.

After Strawberry Switchblade, Rose went on to play drums for Felt, sing for Psychic TV, Church of Raism, Death In June and Current 93, and now has her own project called Sorrow.
By the way, the Japanese import CD reissue of the first and only Strawberry Switchblade album is definitely worth the $20+ pricetag.

As half of Strawberry Switchblade, Rose's baby-doll voice and dark music, as well as the famous polka-dots, were more than well-known.
Sorrow, however, is closer to Strawberry Switchblade's dark pop than any of those acts.
This is Strawberry Switchblade grown up, less poppy and more atmospheric, music awash with traditional and classical instruments, topped with Rose's voice, which still has a light baby-doll feel, but has matured and improved over the years.

Strawberry Switchblade - The Platinum Collection
Frequently remembered as one-hit wonders, Strawberry Switchblade's three minutes of fame occured back in 1984 with the cute electro-pop ditty 'Since Yesterday'.
Although publicised as an introduction to their music, this collection contains virtually the entire recorded works of songwriting duo Rose McDowell and Jill Bryson, including all the tracks from their one and only album, albeit in confusingly random order.
Looking back it's a shame that they didn't progress to a second album but at least this compilation does justice to a fine act whose songs have stood the test of time pretty well.
