Streaked Spiderhunter: This species was most restricted in its habitat requirements and was limited to the areas of wild banana.
Streaked Spiderhunters were most difficult to remove from the nets and struggled until they died of exhaustion unless quickly re- moved.

A scarce bird in the area, although the streaked underparts make identification relatively easy compared with the other flowerpeckers.
Little Spiderhunter Arachnothera longirostra One was seen briefly at Lulagaon on 23/11.
Streaked Spiderhunter Arachnothera magna Singles were seen at Gorumara, Chapramari and Mahakal Trail, pleasingly with very good views each time.

The sunbirds and spiderhunters are very small passerine birds which feed largely on nectar, although they will also take insects, especially when feeding young.
Flight is fast and direct on their short wings.

Regarding birds I saw grey bellied bulbul, spiderhunter spp.
streaked bulbul, white rumped sharma, red eye bulbul, crested serpent eagle, oriental honey buzard.
According to the officer there she saw pita spp, asian paradise flycatcher the dark morph, blue crowned hanging parrot.

Interestingly, parakeets were conspicuous by their absence - none were observed in the previous survey in the northern range also.
Once we were having trouble identifying a female Thrush with streaks in the throat - luckily the male soon dropped by and we found them to be a pair of Tickell's Thrush.
Streaked Spiderhunter was seen once while the Little was always around -many flowerpeckers were left unidentified except for a male Scarletbacked.

Accommodation is good-value, and towards the end of the day I was happy to lay down the binoculars and relax in the tubs around the hot springs.
Birds: Dusky Munias are common around the entrance buildings at dusk and dawn, and the hot springs can be good in the early morning before the tourists pour in (Thick-billed Spiderhunter, Banded Broadbill).
The canopy walkway is definitely better than the one in Taman Negara, since it opens at 7 a.m., when most tourists are still in bed.

 BIRDCHAT archives -- July 2003, week 3 (#8)
We climb the stairs of the wat and find a pair of Brown-cheeked Fulvettas at eye level just beyond the carved stone nagas, snakes that protect the temple.
Streaked Wren-Babbler pops in and out of the limestone.
Off to the right near the top is a stream bed trail and another Rusty-naped Pitta tortures us from deep inside the thick foliage.

 Birds and other wildlife around Chiang Dao
Further there are goodies as White-crowned Forktail, Eye-browed and Streaked Wren-Babbler, White-hooded Bulbul, Crested Finchbill, Spectacled Barwing, Rusty-cheeked Scimitar-Babbler, Mountain Bamboo-Partridge, Rusty-naped Pitta, Scarlet Finch and some Redstarts (White-bellied, Blue-fronted and Daurian).
But the lack of lowland forests means that species who are regular found up to 800/1000 m are lacking or are uncommon around Chiang Dao.
Golden-fronted, Blue-winged and Orange-bellied Leafbird (the last 2 common), Streaked and Little Spiderhunter, Thick-billed and Buff-bellied Flowerpecker can be seen in this tree.

Since the flycatcher is so rare, I felt it better to err on the side of caution...
STREAKED TUFTEDCHEEK: I heard something twice along the Tanager Trail that sounded like a tuftedcheek, but I wasn't comfortable enough with the differences at the time to tell which one it was for sure.
A little guy turned out to be a little “girl”, a female Plain-colored Seedeater who gave great looks through the scope of all her streaks!

The most exciting find was of a pair of Pied Harriers hunting over the fields and then seen on the ground giving superb scope views.
An early start the next day and we arrived at The Gap just after first light, we found numerous bird waves, so many birds probably only half were identified, Sunbirds, Spiderhunters, Leafbirds, Minivets and Flowerpeckers, Pigeons, Swifts and many more species.
We also found an adult Blyth's Hawk-eagle with a well grown chick on the nest close enough for photographs.

 Khao Nor Chuchi bird watching, Gurney's Pitta trip report
At the edge of the jungle, Yotin stopped us to check out a big tree that was in flower.
We spotted Yellow-vented Flowerpeckers, Yellow-eared Spiderhunters, a Grey-breasted Spiderhunter, Thick-billed Spiderhunters, Orange-bellied Flowerpeckers and a couple of Plain Sunbird.
A Streaked Bulbul flew by and gave us a brief glimpse.

Other good species along the trail included: Cutia (a pair), Streaked Wren-babbler (at least two families), Oriental Cuckoo (1), Emerald Dove, Lesser Yellownape, Mountain Leaf Warbler (4), Black Laughingthrush (4), Golden-throated Barbet (heard only), Green Magpie, Red-headed Trogon (heard only), White-browed Shrike-babbler (5).
A Large Scimitar-babbler was heard calling several mornings at the other side of the valley.
Several spiderhunters at TN could have been this species, but were only briefly seen.

We had great views of several species that are often very shy and difficult to see, at least in other parts of their range.
Notable amongst these were Bay Woodpecker, a raucous pair of Common Green Magpies, Rufous-browed Flycatcher, a duetting pair of portly Large Scimitar Babblers bounding around us, and Streaked and Pygmy Wren Babblers.
Other highlights at Bukit Fraser were a stunning Red-headed Trogon, Little Cuckoo Dove, several Slaty-backed Forktails, some superb Sultan Tits, and the usual flocks of Mountain Fulvettas and Long-tailed Sibias.

Penang is easily reached by train from Kuala Lumpur (to Butterworth then ferry across the strait) and every second building is a hotel or a restaurant.
Taiping is just a short bus (or train) ride south of Georgetown (Penang) and is a very Chinese town and well worth a visit, although perhaps largely only ornithologically so as an access point to Bukit Larut.

Most of the species found in Malaysia are common all around the world except for 2 kinds of birds, i.e.
The more common birds to be found on Fraser's Hill are the Silver Eared Mesia, Large Niltara, Mountain Fouvetta, Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Mountain Bulbul, Streaked Spiderhunter, Long Tailed Sibia and Chestnut Capped Laughingthrush.
