The Sports Gaming Network (SGN) - Street Hoops (PS2) Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Activision joins the fray this year with Street Hoops, which aims to bring all that is stereotypical with street ball and the "gangsta" image of some NBA stars to the PS2.
Street Hoops is afflicted with the same problem that plagued Live 2001 a few years back.
As I was playing Street Hoops, my mind was drifting for some reason to EA's Rock the Rink, an arcade hockey title that has practically nothing in common with a hockey simulation, but was a blast to play due to the tight controls.

Street Hoops review for the PS2
Playground hoops has gotten all kinds of coverage over the past few years, thanks in part to those kickass Nike commercials with the mad dribbling and the success of flashy new NBA up-and-comers like Darius Miles.
Then there was NBA Street, which not only upped the ante on NBA Jam style arcade basketball, but also brought a whole new level of gameplay to arcade sports thanks to its mishmash of simple control and SSX tricking.
Street Hoops tries to capture the sensationalized style of hardcore playground ball, but only manages to come off as a weak, thinly veiled copycat.

 Street Hoops
Street Hoops is an obvious and terrible rip off of NBA Street that should never have seen the light of day.
However, in Street Hoops, it almost seems like your ultimate goal is to create the most laced out, afro topped, gangsta' superstar, and it doesn't matter how they play, as long as they have 15lb gold chains swinging around their necks.
Street Hoops does offer a wide variety of gameplay modes, such as the main Championship Mode, as well as varying levels of full and half court play.

Street ballers play for the love of the game on the paved courts and urban playgrounds of America, not the love of the almighty dollar and adoration of the masses.
This is the game of basketball that Activision is hoping to capture with Street Hoops for the Xbox, a title similar in spirit but not in its execution to the excellent EA Big Sports’ NBA Street.

Planet GameCube Review: Street Hoops   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
However, at its heart, Street Hoops is clearly an attempt at attaining the same market niche NBA Street capitalized on over a year ago, with many of the exact same game elements.
These cosmetic elements distinguish Street Hoops from its urban hoop brethren, but the bottom line is that they don't alter the core gameplay, which comes as the title's most disappointing element.
Street Hoops just doesn't feel authentic in terms of conveying the gritty aspects of playground ball -- the physics are completely nutty (folks fly through the air like they've just seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), but what's worse is that the A.I. isn't sound or realistic.

I walk past the cage on West 4th in New York City every day, and there's usually a massive crowd clinging to the chickenwire, no matter what time it is. Naturally, there's some serious 5-on-5 going down on the court, but little did I know that this was the most famous park in the world.

If Activision’s Street Hoops (SH) were an NBA team, they’d beat the Grizzlies but it sure doesn’t mean they’d win a Championship.
Since a small minority will know anything about the street ballers in SH there’s a learning curve when it comes to figuring out who’s who, their strengths and weaknesses, and even what position they play.
Street Hoops could be a strong basketball contender – it has all the equivalent modes and features plus some moderate challenge from the AI – if it learns from it’s shortcomings and does something to address them.
