The origin of the earliest Soviet criminal songs can be traced to the "city romance" of the first decade of the 20th century and its popularization in the cabaret culture of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and (from the early 1920s) Kiev and Odessa.
In the most famous Soviet criminal song "Murka," the female character who betrays her fellow criminals and takes a job in the police station because she falls in love with a police officer is condemned to an impoverished life with no good clothes ("without a single pair of stockings").
Songs were frequently rewritten, new couplets or rhymes were added, and new versions might have very little in common with the original.

 Street Songs - Wal-Mart
STREET SONGS is an unusual CD in that it combines the virtuoso percussion playing of Evelyn Glennie with the vocal pyrotechnics of the King's Singers.
Although the disc derives its title from the so-called songs of innocence by children from the British Isles, this recording ventures into a wide variety of folkloric and exotic sources, including the music of the African Bushmen and Zulu chant music.
One of the standout tracks is "Song of the Broken String" by Peter Klatzow, a moody, slow-moving work evocative of ancient church music that has each of the King's Singers taking solo turns over the spare vibraphone playing of Glennie.

Rick James - Street Songs Review - sputnikmusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
First things first, the front cover of this album is no where near as awesome as the back cover, with a still frame of a police officer with his hand on Slick Rick’s rear, Rick’s eyebrow raised, during an arrest.
Special attention must be paid to the mega hit, “Superfreak.” I’ll admit, I recognized this song from MC Hammer’s “Can’t Touch This.” But this is one great, great song.
There are two ballads in Street Songs, “Make Love to Me” and “Fire and Desire.” These rely a lot less on the explosive qualities of the brass and the funk of the bass, and a lot more on Rick’s merit as a singer.
