  THE STREET RAILWAY HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES
The route from Washington and Main Streets via Washington to Figueroa to Jefferson was discontinued in 1892, and the franchise abandoned on account of the expense entailed by the paving of Figueroa Street.
The third section was opened from Main and Requena Streets to North Broadway and Workman Streets, Nov. 1, 1889; from Seventh Street and Grand Avenue to Jefferson Street and Grand Avenue, in November, 1889; and from Seventh Street and Grand Avenue to Seventh and Alvarado Streets, December 9, 1889.
Street railways in Los Angeles in those days were anything but a safe investment, and although we find that almost all the lines of the city are now (1921) under one control they still were not successful financially.

Chicago had one of the largest street railway systems in the world before it was replaced by buses in the 1950s.
The street railway systems in 1867 tried replacing horses with small steam locomotives called “dummies,” but the public objected to the smoke, noise, and sparks they generated.
The street railways were the victims of their own high costs, increased use of the automobile, overregulation, and population migrations to the suburbs.

Fenchurch Street is a railway station in the south eastern corner of the City of London close by the Tower of London and two miles (3.2 km) east of Charing Cross.
The station became the London terminus of the London Tilbury and Southend Railway (LTSandR) in 1858; additionally, from 1850 until the opening of Broad Street station in 1865 it was also the City terminus of the North London Railway.
Fenchurch Street is one of the four stations whose names are used in the standard UK edition of the game of Monopoly.

J.R. Reid, President of the Chatham Street Railway, is in communication with the Mead Electric Light Co., of Toronto, in regard to their new system of electric lighting and motive power, whereby a dynamo is absolutely dispensed with and a simple chemical battery substituted therefore.
The question of having a street railway or not having one is an important question to the town, and should be fully considered before the last measure is resorted to as it is presently proposed.

The Sprague system configuration of electric street railway components used in Richmond in 1888 became an industry prototype which was used on the great majority of all subsequent electric street railways.
The revolution that began on the streets of Richmond was so intense and rapid that in a little over a decade animal-powered street railways (the dominant form of street railways before Richmond) had all but disappeared from the face of the earth.
Sprague's prototype electric street railway system in 1888 may well be the greatest technological achievement in the history of the City of Richmond, Virginia.

The Market Street Railway survived as an independent company until 29-Sep-1944, when it was taken over by the San Francisco Municipal Railway.
There is a railfan organization known as the Market Street Railway which promoted the new F Market Street line and organizes occasional electric rail festivals.
The Market Street portion of the Castro line was replaced by the 8 Market streetcar line, which in turn was replaced by the 8 Market trolley bus line, which in its turn was replaced by the F Market streetcar line in 1996.

The Seattle City Railway went bankrupt in 1893 and was sold in foreclosure to the Seattle Electric Company, which had acquired most of the city's transit lines, in 1901.
To persuade voters to pass a measure to replace electric and cable streetcars with trolley buses, the Seattle Municipal Street Railway staged a race between a trackless trolley running under temporary wires and a streetcar on the counterbalance.
Like Seattle's Union Trunk Line, the Tacoma Railway and Motor Company's cable line, one of the last to be built in the United States, was meant to be part of an integrated system, connecting electric lines on different levels with the downtown area.

In any event, the Exeter Street Railway, begun on May 19, 1897 was finished as far as the Exeter terminal is concerned on July 3, 1897 and the terminal point at Hampton Beach -- a point on ocean boulevard about opposite Highland avenue -- was reached on July 9th of that year.
So, it was arranged that this construction company would build and equip the Exeter Street Railway, receiving as payment such capital stock and bonds as the new utility would be authorized to issue, except that the directors of the railway were to receive ten shares of stock.
This utility was to purchase electricity and power from the Exeter Street Railway which it would in turn resell to residents of Hampton and Exeter, a business which the Railway Company could not legally engage in under its charter.

In Stone and Webster's final plan the tracks from their newly acquired Plymouth & Kingston Street Railway would come off the streets and be placed on a series of unimproved dirt roads that would eventually become Route 27.
The Plymouth & Sandwich Street Railway was incorporated in April of 1888, and in 1914 a mile of track was added to connect Sagamore Beach to the Sagamore Depot on the other side of the canal.
The rails crossed the water on a wooden bridge that was the predecessor of the Sagamore Bridge.

 Bellows Falls & Saxtons River Street Railway
The BFandSR Street Railway operated over 6.25 miles of track from the Boston and Maine and Rutland Railroad station to Barber park and the town of Saxtons River.
The street railway purchased second hand, 56 pound rail from the Boston and Maine Railroad.
From the B and M and Rutland passenger station, the track was laid South, along parallel to the passenger platform and West, up Bridge Street to the village square.

The Street Railway Journal was the publication detailing the rapidly developing events in the street railway industry in the last century.
Last year 1934 carloads were moved on its lines by a 17-ton electric locomotive with a draw-bar pull of 4000 lbs., from or two the Hocking Valley Railway Company.
Eight of these cars are of the Brill make, six being ten-bench open summer cars mounted on No. 21-E trucks for 27-hp motors, and two closed combination passenger and baggage cars mounted on "Eureka" maximum traction trucks for 35-hp motors.

The Richmond Union Passenger Railway streetcar jumped the tracks and ran into a marble pillar at the Saint James Hotel on 12th and Bank Streets.
Although public transportation policies have led to the elimination of electric street railways, the Sprague system prototype continues to be used around the world as an integral part of balanced transportation systems and is embodied in the design of many modern Light Rail Transit systems.
Electric street railway service in Richmond ended on November 25, 1949, almost 62 years after the inaugural run.

Renumbered to No. 19 in 1973, it was scrapped in 1986 after being judged to be in too poor a condition to be rehabilitated.

This required moving the ornamental street light poles to a position between the inner and outer tracks, and eliminating the passenger loading area for the St. Charles cars on the outer track at St. Charles Street.
Wide gauge double track was built on Canal Street, using the bus lanes in the inner-track position, from Baronne/Dauphine to the foot of Canal, and connected to the Riverfront line, which was converted to wide gauge.
Note that the double-track connection from Canal Street to the car barn is located on RTA property, not in the cross street (at the left).
