Strensall Common is a fine orienteering area, though the event we hold every year certainly does not show it at it's best.
Those members of Ebor who train on Strensall in the spring and summer months really enjoy running in the dryer heathland terrain, which is so different from most orienteering areas.
I hope the marvellous figure of 279 entries on the day were not put off from returning to Strensall - our long term plans are to enable you to see it at it's best in a summer event next time.

His parents, Keith and Debbie, had to change their plans for his headstone twice, after parish councilors refused their pleas for a photo-plaque of Jamie - who died at the age of only 14 - to be placed on the gravestone.
Strensall and Towthorpe Parish Council also objected to a heart with an arrow through it containing the name of Jamie's girlfriend, Helen.

The "crime-free" village of Strensall, near York, is still in a state of shock after the terrifying double murder last weekend.
Strensall is a quiet, relaxed village – not the sort of place where such things happen – but this week it has been subdued and uneasy.
The unease will obviously continue until someone is arrested and Strensall can get back to its normal peaceful activities, including listening to the community police officer telling the parish council how lucky everyone is to live in such a nice, crime-free area.

The disadvantage of golf on a public stray eventually proved too much, and a site at Strensall, six miles north of the city, was chosen in 1904 – conveniently close to the village station and a major army training camp.
It was laid out with admirable efficiency and speed on Army land next to Strensall Camp – it is said with the use of military labour.

Snipe were heard drumming in the valley on the 22nd, and on Strensall Common on the 28th.
Two Tree Pipits were singing on Strensall Common on the 28th.30+ Waxwings were seen in Cemetery Road in York on the 11th, still around on the 19th, at Rawcliffe, where 26 were seen four days later.
One Northern Wheatear was seen from the Garganey Hide at North Duffield Carrs on the 8th, and two at Cornfield NR on the 27th, three on Towthorpe Common on the 28th and two on Strensall Common on the 30th.
