Strepsirrhini - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Strepsirrhini clade is one of the two suborders of primates.
One of the most distinguishing characteristic of these 111 species is their wet noses, and it is this feature for which the grouping is named.
The Strepsirrhini suborder is composed of seven families split into three groups.

Strepsirrhini - definition of Strepsirrhini - Labor Law Talk Dictionary (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.unc.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
One of their most distinguishing characteristic of these 82 species is that they have wet noses and it is this feature which the grouping is named for.
However the prosimian tarsiers have been shown to bemore closely related to the simians, and so it has been moved into the Anthropoidea, which is now renamed as Haplorrhini and Prosimii renamed as Strepsirrhini.
If the Aye-aye represents a form that is ancestral to all the rest of Strepsirrhini, then it evolved away from the strepsirrhine line between 63 million years ago (when the strepsirrhines split from the primitive primate line) and 50 mya (the lemur/loris split).

The above date for primate evolution is still not a conservative estimate as some recent sources of literature report the date of evolution of lemuriforms specifically at 66 to 62 million years ago (MYA) using multigene phylogenetic analysis (Yoder et.

Additional remains of Wadilemur elegans, a primitive stem galagid from the late Eocene of Egypt
Phylogenetic analysis of 359 morphological features scored across 95 living and extinct crown primate taxa supports a stem galagid placement for Wadilemur and older Saharagalago, and a close relationship between crown strepsirrhines and the Eocene African taxa "Anchomomys" milleri, Djebelemur, and Plesiopithecus (none of which appear to be closely related to European anchomomyins).
This scheme of relationships supports the hypothesis that crown Strepsirrhini is of Afro-Arabian origin and that lemuriforms likely colonized Madagascar by crossing the Mozambique Channel.
Wadilemur's known dental and postcranial morphology provides additional support for the hypothesis that galagids and lorisids had diverged by the close of the middle Eocene, and, by bolstering the 37 million-year-old calibration point for crown lorisiform origins provided by Saharagalago, indirect support for the hypothesis of an ancient origin of crown Strepsirrhini and crown Primates.

The omomyids are another extinct group of prosmians but they are believed to be haplorrhines, closely related to the tarsiers, but an outgroup to the rest of the haplorrhines.

This is a schematic survey of the occurrence of the LH receptor type II mRNA without exon 10 among the primate order.
While the suborder of the prosimians (Strepsirrhini) shows neither CG [24] nor LHR type II, in the second suborder of the anthropoid primates (Haplorrhini), both LHR types with and without exon 10 occur as well as the hormone CG.
The infraorders of the Old World monkeys (Catarrhini) and the great apes revealed LHR type I with exon 10, but exon 10 was absent in the infraorder of the New World monkeys (Platyrrhini), in which species from two out of the three recent families were demonstrated to exhibit LHR type II lacking exon 10 mRNA.

The phylogenetic position of the aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) has also been considered problematic.
Its bizarre morphology and unusual ecological specializations have made phylogenetic placement within the Strepsirrhini difficult.
The phylogenetic confusion has therefore made it difficult to arrive at a realistic biogeographic model to explain the presence of primates on Madagascar.
