 The Endocochlear Potential
In the middle of stria vascularis are the capillaries and intermediate cells.
On the basis of this finding, an explanation was developed in which the EP was generated not by the marginal cells, but instead by the basal cells of stria vascularis in an analogous way to that of the electroplaque in the electric eel.
Basal cells, intermediate cells and fibrocytes of the spiral ligament are joined by gap junctions, which are believed to be required to facilitate K movements towards the endolymph.

Report on 16th International Pigment Cell Conference   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
She presented strong morphological, histological, cell and molecular biological evidence that the epidermal melanocyte of the mammal and bird may have evolved in a convergent manner from the 3 chromatophore cell types (melanophore, xanthophore, iridophore) found in fish, amphibia and reptiles.
Increasing one type of cell population is at the expense of the suppressed cell type population, suggesting transdifferentiation.
The environment of the epidermis is continually exposed to oxidative stress, ultraviolet radiation, cytokines, cytotoxic lymphocytes, and biochemical triggers of cell damage, and melanocyte survival is determined by a balance of survival signals and death signals.

The marginal cells of the stria vascularis were positive for occludin/claudin-1/-3/-5/-8/-9/-12/-18 and for occludin/claudin-1/-3/-8/-10/-12/-14/-18 in 10-week and 3-(6-)day mice, respectively.
In the developing cochlea various ion channels are expressed in outer and inner hair cells as well as in spiral ganglia neurons either shortly before, during or after the onset of hearing, dependent on the differentiation stage of the cell.
We analysed the expression of different ion channels in hair cells and spiral ganglia neurons and studied a presumptive thyroid hormone (TH) dependancy in animals in which TH is retracted by goitrogen, TSH receptor mutations or TR mutations.

In the adult rat cochlea, immunolabeling of ZO-1 is present in the apical surface of the marginal cells and the basal cell layer.
Cx26 and ZO-1 are closely associated at the lower surfaces of basal cells of the stria vascularis.
Cx26-positive spots are localized at the side of the spiral ligament, whereas ZO-1-positive spots are distributed at the side of the stria vascularis and the apical surfaces of marginal cells.

ANNALS Jul1999: EXPRESSION OF INTERCELLULAR ADHESION MOLECULE#1 IN RAT INNER EAR DUE TO BACTERIAL . . .   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Positive staining with anti#S pneumoniae antibody was detected in the marginal cells of the stria vascularis of rats sacrificed 3 days after S pneumoniae inoculation, but almost no staining was detected in those sacrificed at 14 days.
Strong ICAM-1 expression was detected in the basal cell layer of the stria vascularis of rats sacrificed 3 days after inoculation, but the intensity of the staining had decreased by 14 days.
These results suggest that the stria vascularis may be a site of the inner ear damage that follows bacterial inoculation into the middle ear cavity.

1999; Elongated pericyte-like cells connect discrete capillaries in the stria vascularis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
We have reported bridging structures between two discrete capillaries in the stria vascularis (Takeuchi and Ando, Cell Tissue Res., 293:271-275,1998).
As serial sections for electron microscopy revealed that this structure was surrounded by basal lamina, laminin and type IV collagen were stained by a immunofluorescence method and observed using a confocal laser microscope.
We propose possible functions of the bridging cell as follows: (i) giving mechanical strength to the tortuous capillary network in the stria vascularis, (ii) regulating the blood flow since pericytes are usually characterized by their contractility, and (iii) participating in the intercellular communication in the stria vascularis via gap junctions.
