North Staffs Miners Wives was formed in 1985 from the members of the ten food centres which were set up in the 1984 strike around the North Staffs coalfield.
When the strike ended, our aims were to give support to the sacked miners and their families and to make sure they were never forgotten for the sacrifices they gave to the strike.
The group travelled as far afield as Belfast, where on one of their trips in 1989, the women got arrested by police at Manchester airport under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and were held by Special branch officers for eight hours.

Mass strike action spread across the coalfields of Britain with the support of the National Union of Mineworkers and its President Arthur Scargill.
I have no memories of the miners' strike but was recently fascinated to watch the political wrangling between the government and the fire brigades union.

The All-India Cable TV Forum, a group of multi-system operators (MSOs) and cable operators, that had called for an indefinite countrywide strike, today claimed that the cable television service was fled out not only in Delhi but in almost all the northern States and in major cities in the south and east.
The television operators are agitating against the Budget proposal to bring them under the service tax net and increase it from eight to 10 per cent.
In Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan, the strike evoked a good response where over 80 per cent of households failed to receive transmission, while in the south, the strike was complete in Andhra Pradesh and in Bangalore, he said.

North Korean combat pilots are believed to fly only 20 percent of the time that South Korean and U.S. pilots spend in the air.(67) Recent reports indicate an even further decline in pilot flight training.(68) A lack of appropriate training greatly affects pilot proficiency and combat effectiveness.
