The resident string quartet of the Library of Congress in 1963 A string quartet is a musical ensemble of four string instruments—usually two violins, a viola and cello—or a piece written to be performed by such a group.
Mozart's production for piano during Vienna years found its peaks with the 17 piano concertos, the most significant works of the great collection of 27 concertos, where he revolutionized the concerto style, giving it a free symphonic dimension, with the solo instrument exploiting all of its technical possibilities and playing never conflicts with the orchestra.
Mozart's last three quartets, dedicated to the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II, are noted for the cantabile character of the parts for cello (the instrument played by the king himself), the sweetness of sounds and the equilibrium among the different instruments.

In fact, nowhere was Mozart's ability to separate his troubled physical and emotional condition from the spiritual and musical side of his life more clear than in the sunny D major quartet.
The Third quartet was written in 1946 and is distinguished by its refusal to be bound by the rules of four- movement classical form.
He wrote only one string quartet which was written near the end of his tenure at the Conservatory and is the first of his compositions to be deemed a masterwork.

 Sleeve Notes - Mozart: String Quartets K499 & K589
Mozart based one of the movements of his Flute Quartet in A major, K298, written sometime in 1786/7, on a song by Hoffmeister.
In the new quartet style the melodies are supported not just by harmony, but by accompanying motifs that have their own role to play in the musical argument; it was a civilised discourse between equals, rather than a monologue or a four-way dispute.
We may feel that Mozart’s instinct was correct, for in the subsequent history of the classical string quartet the quatuor concertant turned out to be a blind alley, shunned by the great composers.

Mozart composed his first string quartet in G major K.80 aged fourteen in a single evening in Italy in 1770, but the work is really a Divertimento highly influenced by Sammartini of the Italian instrumental school.
By 1782 Mozart had become familiar with and admired many of the great string quartets of Haydn particularly the six ’Russian’ quartets Op.33 which had opened up for him substantial artistic challenges that he was to explore enthusiastically.
On the surface the quartet appears to be the lightest and least profound of the set of six and closest in style to that of Haydn however it is an uplifting and peaceful work of no less bold invention.

 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Haydn recognised Mozart`s genius, and until the end of his life exerted his every effort to bring recognition and fame to the younger composer who, he sincerely felt, was without an equal in all music.
But to Mozart, ill and morbid as he was at this time, it appeared that this stranger was a messenger from the other world sent to warn the composer that the time had come for him to compose his own requiem.
Mozart was short and slim, and though his head was slightly too large for the body its well-proportioned features gave him an attractive appearance.

Mozart returned to quartet composition in 1782 and, during the next eight years, wrote his ten great quartets.
Next, in 1786, came the "Hoffmeister" Quartet, which stands alone, and finally, the set of three "Prussian" Quartets, which were written during 1789 and 1790 and published only a few days before Mozart's death.
The Quartet in D major, K. 499, was composed for Mozart's friend and publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister.

This is the third, and last, version of what was initially conceived as a quintet for string quartet and second cello, like Schubert's great C Major masterpiece.
But by November 23, 1940, when his Piano Quintet had its first performance (Moscow, the Beethoven Quartet with the composer at the piano), Shostakovich was once more being praised by the Soviet government as well as the people, who had hailed his Fifth Symphony before the echoes of the final chord had ceased resounding.
The ensemble used by Mozart (string quartet plus extra viola) also was used by Beethoven (3 viola quintets), Mendelssohn (2), Dvorak (1), and Brahms (2).

It is commonly associated with musical groups, such as a string quintet, or a group of five singers, but can be applied to any situation where five similar or related objects are considered a single unit.
In classical instrumental music, any additional instrument (such as a piano, clarinet, oboe, etc.) joined to a the usual string quartet (two violins, a viola, and a cello), gives the resulting ensemble its name, such as "piano quintet", "clarinet quintet", etc. A piece of music written for such a group is similarly named.
In jazz music a quintet is any group of five players, usually containing a drum set (pedal bass, snaredrum sometimes brushed, and top hat and brushed cymbals), string bass or electric bass, and groups of one or two of the following instruments, guitar, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet, or trombone.

Romantic-era accounts of his bleak, poverty-stricken death may have been exaggerated, but Mozart's life was indeed tragically short.
Many of the twenty-seven piano concertos Mozart wrote to showcase his own skills had their premieres in the middle 1780s, and he enjoyed considerable success with two comic operas, Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, each of which had a serious undercurrent that lent an air of striking modernity.
Mozart's remarkable talents, his rich musical legacy, and his dramatic life and death have made him one of music's truly mythic figures.

The Quartet's career spanned the 1930s to the early 1960s, but many musicologists tend to feel the group's best years were the 1940s--the years documented in this collection.
The Clarinet Quintet is a work that the group recorded three times (once with Benny Goodman!), but the recording here with the Belgian clarinetist Gustave Langenus is perhaps the most supple and relaxed of the three.
By contrast, the piano quartet in E-flat major is one of the sunniest and happiest pieces Mozart ever wrote--that is, after the sublime E-flat major Divertimento.

 WCPE - Catalogs - Mozart
Although Mozart had been dead for more than seven decades, he managed to shock the music world by the sheer productivity of a too-brief life of nearly 36 years.
This post-mortem shock was due to the publication in 1862 of A Chronological Theme Catalog of the Works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by Ludwig Kochel, an accomplished mineralogist, biologist, student of law and fanatic about Mozart.
Some years earlier, Kochel had set about trying to compile a chronological catalog of the composer's music - a daunting task for a number of reasons, not the least of which was the effort involved in tracking down the manuscripts and the attempt to determine when the pieces were composed.
