The String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat major, Opus 130, by Ludwig van Beethoven was completed in 1825.
Beethoven was quite fond of fugues in his later years (others can be found in the final movements of the Hammerklavier Sonata, the Ninth Symphony, and the Piano Sonata No. 31).
The six follow the cycle of movements seen in the Ninth Symphony and occasionally elsewhere in Beethoven's work (opening, dance movement, slow movement, finale), except that the middle part of the cycle is repeated: opening, dance movement, slow movement, dance movement, slow movement, finale.

The 12th Quartet is also extraordinary: the music's journey from the bittersweet opening of the first movement moderato into the second movement's unease and dread and on to the work's triumphant resolution suggests the kind of musical path upon which Beethoven, in his late period, traveled.

One of these is the Pacifica String Quartet, not yet 10 years old, with a zest for performance that carries a listener along breathlessly, passionately.
This was certainly suggested in their performance of Gyorgi Ligeti's Quartet No. 1, "Metamorphoses Nocturnes." That title, of course, suggests Bartok's excursions into "night music," and some wags call this Bartok's Seventh Quartet.
The former is part of Mendelssohn's astonishing teenage output, but modeled on Beethoven's example, and so lacking the effervescent adolescent joy of the octet or scherzo from "A Midsummer Night's Dream." The Beethoven, of course, comes from the end of that composer's life in fullest maturity.

CONCERT REVIEW: Avalon String Quartet -- A rising star
The Avalon String Quartet’s concert on Feb. 26 in Kresge Auditorium was overall a pleasing mix of classical and twentieth century compositions, highlighted by a stunning performance of Schuller’s “Quartet No. 3.”
Although the Quartet played the Haydn with excellent balance and ensemble, there were times in their performance that I felt their reading was a little too muscular.
Much of the Quartet’s convincing performance may be attributed to the fact that the Quartet rehearsed with Schuller the week before their concert.

Beethoven returned to writing string quartets in the last years of his life, when he was almost totally deaf and had withdrawn from public appearances.
This six-movement quartet shows the influence of this self-imposed exile in its introspective first and last movements and its quirky presto, while visions of the old, melodic composer shine through in the heartfelt and straightforward "Cavatina," as well as the "Alla danza" movement.
It's the third installment in a Beethoven quartet cycle that is, for my money, "the one" to be collecting as we go into the new century.

It was a performance in which the care that went into their preparation was completely subsumed in the conviction of the living moment.
They attained a rare sense of mystery and expectation in the elliptical moderations and silent bars of the first movement, summoned warmth and severity for the slow movement and a compelling gusto for the finale.
Beethoven has rarely been so cast with elegance, with density, and with fullness.
