String Quartet No. 2 (Borodin) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The main theme of the third movement Nocturne, performed in string orchestra arrangements and perhaps the most famous in the quartet, appears in the musical Kismet also, as And this is my Beloved.
The Borodin Quartet in both its incarnations have specialized in these works, producing fine recordings of them.
The tuneful second group, whose first appearance begins at bar 29 and is announced by a meno mosso and slowing down to a tempo of 60 of the same beat (60 dotted halves to the minute), is used in the musical Kismet as the song "Baubles, Bangles and Beads".

String quartet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although any combination of four string instruments can literally be called a "string quartet", in practice the term refers to a group consisting of two violins (the "first", which usually plays the melody line in the higher register of notes, and the "second" violin, which plays lower notes in harmony), one viola and one cello.
Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847): A string quartet in E-flat (1834)
The standard string quartet is widely seen as one of the most important forms in chamber music, with most major composers, from the late 18th century onwards, writing string quartets.

Backstage Pass: St. Petersburg String Quartet to Perform
Borodin's style is lighter, especially in the case of the beautiful third movement of his String Quartet No. 2.
The internationally-acclaimed St. Petersburg String Quartet, composed of Alla Aranovskaya and Ilya Teplyakov on violin, Aleksey Koptev on viola and Leonid Shukayev on cello, is slated to perform two landmark 19th-century Russian Romantic works on the ensemble's October 26 Faculty Recital.
Borodin's String Quartet was written during the summer of 1881 in the country residence of the composer Lodyshensky in Zhitovo, and premiered by the Galkin-Degtyerev-Rezvetsov-Kuznetsov Quartet at a meeting of the Imperial Russian Musical Society in St. Petersburg on March of the following year.

INKPOT CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: The World of Borodin (Decca)
Borodin's meagre chamber music output is represented here by the Nocturne from the Second String Quartet, ravishingly played by the Borodin Quartet.
From then on, Borodin juggled the twin commitments of work and music successfully, producing two symphonies, two string quartets, and an opera, Prince Igor.
Borodin was not a prolific composer, but the bold originality of his slender offering is a strong claim to his position as one of the most brilliant and nationalistic composers of the nineteenth century.

 mondo marion: Borodin Quartet
The concert opened with Tchaikovsky's String Quartet No. 2 (1874), an odd work that commingles meandering harmonies, tripping dance rhythms, and urgent but inconclusive melodic gestures.
There was an easy precision to the Borodin's playing in the first movement, their lean, astringent sound allowing listeners to savor Tchaikovsky's unexpected layering of dissonances.
While Tchaikovsky's quartet respects the genre's niceties, Igor Stravinsky's knotty, blisteringly intense Three Pieces for String Quartet (1914) explode the medium's formal conventions and sound-palette.

CLASSICAL MUSIC ARCHIVES MP3/WMA: Tchaikovsky String Quartet
The Tchaikovsky String Quartet was formed at the Moscow Conservatory in the early 1970s, when four students - Mikhail Gotsdiner, Andrei Oguievski, Sergei Baturin, and Oleg Smirnov - met in the chamber music classes of Professor R.Davidian, and discovered their mutual love of the quartet medium.
In 1993, the quartet assumed the name Tchaikovsky String Quartet - in tribute to the beloved composer whose death centennial was being celebrated that year.
The Tchaikovsky String Quartet tours regularly throughout Europe, and to date has released two CDs.

DSCH 22 Shostakovich DVD Review - Borodin Quartet Master Class
The previous recipe of the Borodin Quartet, with Mikhail Kopelman, Abramenkov, Dmitri Shebalin and Berlinsky, is represented by a performance of the second movement of Shostakovich's Quintet with Sviatoslav Richter, who maintains, throughout, the monolithic countenance of an Easter Island moai.
This fuel-efficient rendition does not generate as many horsepower as the Borodins' 1967 recording (Chandos CHAN 10064(4); reviewed in DSCH No. 19), especially in that bedlam Waltz of a third movement, where the echoes of Symphony No. 4 are less frenzied.

For anyone seeking the very romantic string quartet music, this is the perfect CD-- romantic almost to the brink of schmaltz, yet irresistibly lyrical.
In it, he musically depicts various events from his life-- his romantic moods, his love of dancing (embodied in the polka of the second movement), his first love, and, in the finale, the deafness which began to appear when he was 50 years old.

 St. Petersburg String Quartet
The Quartet No. 1 by Nadarejshvili, a contemporary composer from the Republic of Georgia, is largely in the mystical, time-slowing vein common to several others writing in Russia, Eastern Europe and England.
Here were string quartets in which music as solemn and elevated as a boy choir singing a Requiem could suddenly sound like an accordion ensemble at an especially raucous wedding or bar mitzvah.
Finally, there is the 14th Quartet, written in the year before Shostakovich's death: the St. Petersburg's performance makes the final movement, with its motifs flying from violin to viola to cello and back, sound like a Dostoyevskian disquisition on the meaning of life.

 Alexander Borodin
The String Quartet No. 2 is one of the most beloved works in the entire quartet literature, and, unlike his other works, was composed in only two months during a summer holiday.
However, for the string quartet, Borodin gravitated to the Austro-German tradition, Beethoven in particular.
Another interesting feature of the Quartet is the use of folk music.

A string quartet exists in manuscript and printed score, but the printed score for an opera must be realized in a production.
During the lifetimes of composers up to Meyerbeer there was no "repertory" of operas.

The Prague is just as adept in presenting the manifold beauties of Borodin's String Quartet No. 2 which, when juxtaposed with the Tchaikovsky, emerges as a work of superior melodic inventiveness.
The ensemble plays with a keen rhythmic and melodic sensitivity that, while not displacing the virtuosity of the Borodin Quartet or the passionate warmth of the St. Lawrence, nonetheless makes for a pleasing and memorable experience.
The Prague players' heartfelt lyricism is certainly welcome in this irresistibly emotive music (their Notturno is delightful), even if they must again yield to the Borodin Quartet's cultivated sensuality.
