Bass guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bass guitar is an electric or acoustic bass - a stringed instrument similar in design to the guitar, but with longer scale and tuned lower in pitch.
The instrument is a descendant of the double bass (a cousin of the violin and viola da gamba) and shares design attributes of the electric guitar and features in common with a range of other bass instruments.
The electric bass, in contrast to the electric upright bass, is played while being held horizontally across the body and may be played with the fingers (and sometimes the thumb) or a plectrum (pick).

New Orleans String Bass Pioneers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The worst part of the problem was that bass sounds loud enough to be clearly recorded tended to knock the recording stylus right out of the groove (Electric microphones did not totally solve this-- as late as 1943 Chester Zardis' slap bass knocked out the stylus in a George Lewis recording session).
Some other early New Orleans bass players from the turn of the century and before may have been of equal or greater importance in their own day to the musicians mentioned, but are less well remembered simply for being less well documented.
Documentation of Southern bass styles is sketchy for these years, but if New Orleans musicians were not exclusive in their use of the style in the years of its development, they were certainly pre-eminent.

 Double Bass String Tension
Questions about string tension brought forth a measurement method (see bottom of page) and suggestions that the data be gathered and posted for the benefit of all.
Hang an empty 1 quart or 1 liter plastic milk or juice jug on the center of the bass string by a chain of partially straightened paper clips or a loop of string.
With some reasonably precise measuring instrument measure the space between the string under test and a neighbor, dial caliper would be superb, a metal machinist's scale would be really good, a school ruler probably adequate, and a yardstick poor but not to be totally rejected.

 stringbass.html - Double Bass
The Double Bass is essentially the Contrabass instrument of the Violin family although it has many differing characteristics.
Some instruments also posses an extra bass string which takes its range down to a B0 or C1 but increasingly more common is a mechanical "finger extension" attached to the bottom string and extending over the peg box which also yields a bottom C1.
It is also finding new ground in a "low" string quartet of two Violas, 'cello and Double Bass and it is also becoming popular as a duet instrument with the Violin.

Build a real, 4-string upright bass using an upright washtub   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The obvious easiest way to create these two fingerboard angles (one for the E string & one for the G string) would be with a table-saw, but it's not hard to do by hand, resorting constantly to a good straight-edge.
It proved to be excellent for the highest pitched three strings of the instrument (G, D and A).
So to sum this paragraph up, I likely won't be going back to the old strings, but still highly recommend their sound, and playability (and certainly their price) to anyone thinking of building this washtub bass.

Here is how it works: An ultra-fine layer of EXP Coating is bonded only to the outer nickel wrap wire, which is then wound onto core.
The result is a built-in barrier against the corrosion and wear that can quickly sap the life out of your strings and your sound.
And since the EXP Coating is cross-linked to the wrap wire prior to winding, the strings retain their natural round wound feel, and keep their "new string tone" three to four times longer than traditional bass guitar strings.
