Samuel Barber - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following year he wrote his String Quartet in B minor, the second movement of which he would arrange, at Arturo Toscanini's suggestion, for string orchestra as Adagio for Strings, and again for mixed chorus as Agnus Dei.
Barber produced three concertos for solo instruments and orchestra, one for violin (completed in 1939), one for cello, and one for piano.
The Piano Concerto was composed for and premiered by pianist John Browning, on September 24, 1962, with Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Lincoln Center, New York.

String Department Chair Matt Glaser and the orchestra's conductor, Associate Professor Eugene Friesen, believe that perfect companions to the Grieg are a 12-bar blues with a hot cello solo followed by a Celtic reel complete with a step-dancing second violinist.
The orchestra's performance on December 20 showcased music from many styles, including a funky original tune that demonstrated that it is possible for string players to lay down a groove as solid as a conventional rhythm section.
During the fall 1999 semester, the orchestra's repertoire was expanded to include many of the musical styles that the department has been teaching for years.

He spent much of his life in the countryside of Hampshire and later near Newbury, where the string orchestra he founded became an important vehicle for the performance of his music.
His interest in earlier English music and in English literature is largely reflected in his music, which owes something to Parry, to his older contemporary Vaughan Williams and to Elgar.
His setting of Wordsworth's Intimations of Immortality was performed at the West of England Three Choirs Festival in 1950, while his Dies natalis, for soprano or tenor and string orchestra, setting poems by Traherne, was originally intended for the same festival in 1939.

INKPOT#28 CLASSICAL MUSIC REVIEWS: SALLINEN - Complte Works for String Orchestra
It used to be that "unknown" and especially "modern" music was too expensive to experiment for record collectors, having to pay so much to explore music that is generally -- and unfairly -- labelled as "atonal, unfriendly, dissonant", among the more polite accusations.
Don't be put off by the dark, ominous opening as the 1981 string arrangement proves to be quite hypnotic, a quality which Sallinen often achieves.
The "afterthought" quality does show in the way Sallinen has the orchestra and cello hint at the dancing melody, which peeks through the score another time before, heralded by a guitar-like introduction (1'48"), the sunny and really very funny theme on solo cello comes out skipping.
