Piano - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the clavichord, strings are struck by tangents which remain in contact with the string.
Silbermann's pianos were virtually direct copies of Cristofori's, but with an important exception: Silbermann invented the forerunner of the modern damper pedal (also known as the sustaining pedal or loud pedal), which permits the dampers to be lifted from all the strings at once.
Piano strings (also called piano wire), which must endure years of extreme tension and hard blows, are made of high quality steel.

 The Piano
The piano is the standard instrument for the equal tempered scale, yet both the high end and low end of the instrument are tuned so that they depart slightly from equal temperament because the sound has been judged to be more pleasing with that arrangement (see "stretched" tuning discussion below).
In the modern piano, the strings are mounted on a cast iron frame to provide the strength to main the required tension in all of these strings (about 30 tons for a grand).
This makes the piano sound better to most ears, partially because the low end of the piano at 27.5 Hz is in a frequency range where your hearing has dropped off considerably, so that the upper harmonics of these low strings are probably heard more prominently than the fundamental.

Strings, standing waves and harmonics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
We shall start with the way strings work, because they are easier to visualise than the vibration of the air in wind instruments, and less complicated than the vibrations of the bars and skins of the percussion family.
Touch the string lightly at a point 1/n of its length from the end (where n is 1, 2, 3 etc), then bow the string close to the end.
Alternatively, touch the string very lightly at a point 1/n of its length from the end, pluck the string close to the end and release the first finger as soon as you have plucked.

Prepared Piano   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
A prepared piano is a piano that has had its sound altered by placing objects between or on the strings.
By placing the preparation between two of the strings on a note which has three strings assigned to it, it is possible to change the timbre of that note by depressing the soft pedal on the piano (which moves the hammers so they strike only two strings instead of all three).
He liked the sound this produced, and this eventually led to his inventing the prepared piano, in which screws, bolts, strips of rubber and other objects are placed between the strings of the piano to change the character of the instrument.

 The Virtual Piano
Since the shorter strings naturally produce less volume and fullness of tone, the notes toward the treble end of the piano (shorter strings) have three strings for each note, while the strings toward the bass side (longer strings) have only one or two strings for each note.
The pinblock is not visible from the exterior of the piano.
In some pianos, these laminations in the bridge run horizontal, that is parallel to the soundboard while in others they are placed vertically, or perpendicular to the soundboard.

Guardian | Weir: Piano Concerto; Music for 247 Strings; Piano Trio etc, Howard/Tomes/Schubert Ensemble/Domus
The three-movement Piano Concerto may seem out of place here, but it is relatively small scale in its requirements, scored for piano and solo strings, even though its gestures are anything but small scale in their effect.
Distance and Enchantment from 1988 is a piano quartet in all but name, while The Bagpiper's String Trio dwells upon the ornamentation of Scottish pipe music without ever resorting to direct quotation.
If sometimes the specific gravity of the older music seems a shade lower than that of the more recent pieces, that is perhaps an illusion; it's just that Weir's art has deepened and complexified as it has developed, at the same time as her raw materials have become more simple.

PIANO WIRE OR STRING- Piano wire and strings
The core of universal strings is hexagonal, so when you remove copper winding, you simply crimp the end of the winding a bit, and the core wire holds the winding in place.
Remove all the bass strings from the piano, and string them on a wire or heavy cord in numerical order-- the order they were on the piano.
If the piano does not have agraffes, as almost all uprights do not, sand the wire right where it passed over the bearing, or where is passes by the upper plate pins.

And since that part of the string making procedure is done by hand, no two bass strings (from Mapes) are ever 100% identical, except by chance.
Regarding Jon Page's comments about Mapes strings, I don't see how the space between the loop and the beginning of the winding could be any different than the original string.
Pierce, the distance from the loop to the beginning of the winding is measured, the core diameter is measured and the overall diameter and winding length of the string is measure.
