They began with Mozart's String Quintet in C Major, K515, in whose opening movement the tendency to repetition of the thematic material in the minor mode is so potent.
In bringing weight to the complex development sections of the work, the sextet underlined its structural force, thus managing to counterbalance the risk that their sound be overly refined.
In this - the original scoring for string sextet, rather than the later string orchestra arrangement - the intimacy and sensuality of the music was overwhelming, attaining exactly the transfiguring power to which the Richard Dehmel poem that inspired the piece alludes.

String Sextet No. 2 in G major, op.
36 Sextet, subtitled Agathe, uses both rhythm and musical notation, the notes A-G-A-H-E (forget the T, the "H" is B natural in German notation), to evoke the name of Brahms’ beloved, Agathe von Siebold, from whom he fled when their marriage seemed expected and impending.
In the C minor String Quartet the Leipzig String Quartet give a thoughtful, rather measured and poised interpretation which fails to reveal the intense heart-searching temperament of this passionate score.

The Joachim Raff Society - String Sextet
It was also the year when he created two masterful works for chamber ensembles - the String Octet op.176 and the String Sextet in G minor op.178.
For a man with such a prolific chamber music output (eight String Quartets, five Violin Sonatas, four Piano Trios) it is odd that he wrote only one work for each of several larger ensembles: Piano Quintet, String Sextet, String Octet and Sinfonietta for ten Winds.
The Sextet medium was still a novelty when the work was written - only Brahms' pair of works from the last decade were then well known.

His String Quartet No. 1, composed in 1989, is subtitled "Maqam." The maqam is the main modal unit of Arabic music, a collection of intervals (both tonal and microtonal) forming the basis for a composition.
The sextet is based on eight texts by Hölderlin.
The composer began by "setting" the texts as lieder and then "increasingly submitted these melodies to musical stylization because I didn't want to have the texts sung." Thus the movements reflect something of the mood and "speech melodies" of the poetic fragments.

Dvorak: String Sextet in A; String Quintet in G, Nash Ensemble
The quintet, completed in 1875, was the work in which he defined his mature musical language, while three years later the sextet was his first to be couched in a recognisably Czech style, and also his first to attract international attention.
By contrast the central pair of movements in the Sextet are unmistakable Dvorak, while in that work's leisurely opening Allegro, Schubert's influence seems the most important; there's even a repeated quotation from his C major String Quintet.

His contribution to the string quartet lies in two of the first Russian quartets to attain prominence in the repertoire, starting in 1875 with the lyrical first and ending ten years later with the summery second.
ASV have generously included the unfinished two movement String Sextet here, with the Lindsays joined by viola player Louise Williams and cellist Raphael Wallfisch in a fulsome reading of a work that owes a lot to Mendelssohn, its harmony and melody adapted to please German music listeners.

Both works can be numbered amongst Raff's finest creations for chamber ensembles but, despite that, this CD is the recording premiere for the Sextet and the Quintet has only appeared once before - on an Adriano LP of very limited circulation a quarter of a century ago.
Raff's biography is surely well known enough by now for it to merit only a couple of paragraphs in booklet notes but here most of the space is devoted to it, at the expense of a longer discussion about the music.
