Stringfellow Barr, president of St. John's College at Annapolis, Maryland, extended the bid to those who would listen to learn on Sunday afternoons.
Barr revealed that he was one broadcaster among the many who did not worry about the size of his unseen audience.
As founding chairman of the program, Dr. Barr sought to make the "show" entertaining as well as informative through an exchange of ideas among three or four guests he invited to join him around the microphone; they were lawyers, Senators, professors, industrialists, financiers, preachers, Army officers, poets or sailors.

President,American Academy for Liberal Education: True radicals, Barr and Buchanan understood that a liberal education is the only truly liberating education--and so they spent their great talents and energies freely and generously to make it so.
Stringfellow Barr and Scott Buchanan, once intellectual household names at mid-century but now largely forgotten, are brilliantly brought back to life in this study.
Barr is persuaded to head the Foundation for World Government, in the course of which he and Buchanan redefine the nature of the problem of world law and world peace.

Great Books - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Erskine of Columbia University, about how to improve the higher education system by returning it to the western liberal arts tradition of broad cross-disciplinary learning.
These academics and educators included Robert Hutchins, Mortimer Adler, Stringfellow Barr, Scott Buchanan, and Alexander Meiklejohn.
The view among them was that the emphasis on narrow specialization in American colleges had harmed the quality of higher education by failing to expose students to the important products of Western civilization and thought.

The Virginia Quarterly Review - A SOUTHERN CHRONICLE: THE VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW AND THE AMERICAN SOUTH, 1925—2000
The South was moving, but not fast enough and not always in the direction liberals hoped; the place seemed to be defined by its shortcomings.
That was why Stringfellow Barr, assistant editor at the founding of the Review, sought "at least one article provocative of intelligent interest in Southern problems on the title page of each issue." Over the next 75 years, the Review attained close to that average.
Stringfellow Barr encouraged the North Carolina regionalists three years later with a warm review of their thick collection on The Culture of the South.

Aristotle -- Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy]
The moral life can be confused with the habits approved by some society and imposed on its young.
We at St. John's College still stand up at the beginning and end of Friday-night lectures because Stringfellow Barr -- one of the founders of the current curriculum -- always stood when anyone entered or left a room.
What he considered good breeding is for us mere habit; that becomes obvious when some student who stood up at the beginning of a lecture occasionally gets bored and leaves in the middle of it.

When I was still a beginning reporter, back in 1963, if I recall, I was sent to the Edgewater Hotel to meet Alexander Meiklejohn, who, in 1927, founded the Experimental College at UW-Madison.
Meiklejohn, then 91 and very frail, and a classics scholar named Stringfellow Barr sat at a table in the Edgewater dining room and talked nonstop, relating Greek literature to the Kennedy presidency, the Cold War and civil rights, among other topics.
And, for the very first time in all these years, I began to understand what liberal education is all about.

In contrast to Harvard University and The College of William and Mary, the two oldest post-secondary schools in America, the College always maintained a small size, generally enrolling fewer than 500 men at a time.
In 1936, the College's Board of Visitors and Governors, faced with dire financial straits caused by the Great Depression, invited educational innovators Stringfellow Barr and Scott Buchanan to introduce essentially the current program of study.
Buchanan became dean of the College, while Barr assumed its presidency.

It is a rare and difficult thing for tutors to teach across the Program and to maintain a proper sense of awe at the size of their task and of humility at their ability to perform it well.
This was why Barr once said later in his life that “[i]t was purple hell to get anybody that could teach the new program at St. John’s College.”
That image calls to mind one of the books our students read as sophomores, Dante’s Divine Comedy, which gives us our most vivid pictures of hell.
