A stringybark can be any of the many Eucalyptus species which have thick, fiberous bark.
In exceptionally fertile locations some stringybark species (in particular Messmate Stringybark Eucalyptus obliqua) can be very large, reaching over 80 metres in height.
Studies have shown that Blue-leaved Stringybark is one of the 20-odd eucalypts preferred by Koalas.

Stringybark is the name of the creek where a mounted police patrol of a sergeant and three constables made their camp when hunting the Kellys.
It seems from the song that they were over-confident and were caught unawares by the Kellys who then mercilessly hunted them down.

In what remains the worst slaying of police in Australian history, on October 26, 1878, Sgt Michael Kennedy and Mounted Constables Thomas Lonigan and Michael Scanlon were killed in a shoot-out with brothers Ned and Dan Kelly and gang members Joe Byrne and Steve Hart at Stringybark Creek.
Yesterday descendants of the slain police and bushrangers gathered at the site of the killings with dignitaries, descendants of the men involved and serving Victoria Police officers to unveil a new memorial.
