Topic: Strip cultivation

Ridge and furrow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The phenomenon was created as a result of the strip cultivation that was widely practised at the time whereby large fields were divided into long, narrow plots called furlongs.
It originally derived from the Old English words for a 'furrow length' and was then taken to mean a length of ploughing across an acre (4047 m²) of land and so its exact value would vary dependant on local constraints.
Each strip would be cultivated separately by different families who would turn the ploughed soil into the centre of their strip by the continued use of a non-reversing plough, creating over many years raised ridges bounded by deep furrows.

The cultivation techniques in use vary greatly and depend upon the nature of the terrain, the existing vegetation and the physical characteristics of the soil.
In semi-arid and arid regions of the Mediterranean basin, gradoni-type ditches are built on contours of sloping land by ploughing the soil at gradients of 20-40 percent.
Entire area cultivation or clean cultivation is a pre-planting soil preparation which usually consists of two consecutive stages: pioneer ploughing; and disking and harrowing prior to planting (or top soil tillage using a disc harrow).

Clean cultivation in the strip to a depth of 15 centimeters has proved of vital importance to the survival of seedlings.
The cultivated strips are sown broadcast in January to 'March at the rate of 6 kilos per hectare (pine), and the seed lightly covered by raking.
As a result of this clean cultivation system, no irrigation is necessary, as the spring cultivation gives a surface mulch which reduces soil evaporation -losses and preserves soil moisture sufficient for the young trees, so that even in abnormally dry years casualities in new plantations rarely exceed 5 percent.

 Management of Agricultural Landscapes
Cultivation, or tillage, of soil is integral to the process of raising most crops.
The amount of cultivation of rowcrop fields influences bird use by affecting the amount of crop residue on the surface of the soil.
Strip cover provides habitat for most of the Neotropical migratory birds of agricultural landscapes because it is used by birds requiring either herbaceous or woody vegetation.

The cultivation that they represent does not evenly "cut out" the valley and ridge slopes in the first contour strip, that is from the Keyline to the 170-foot contour line.
The cultivation runs are again generally higher in the valley than on the adjacent ridges in the same contour strip.
Cultivation above the Keyline is first completed to enable land, usually the steeper areas, to absorb the maximum or all the rain that falls on it.

Corn yield response to in-season cultivation varies from year to year, but positive benefits may be obtained in the absence of weeds on soils that crust easily.
Cultivation reduced the density of giant foxtail, especially as tillage was reduced, but had no effect on velvetleaf.
In-season cultivation was of great benefit for all tillage systems, resulting in an average yield increase of 23 bu/A. Lower yields with no tillage were due primarily to wooly cupgrass and giant foxtail competition.

Knives on the strip tiller (most commonly set at a 30” spacing) prepare the seedbed and place fertilizer (dry or liquid, depending on the setup of a particular unit) simultaneously.
Each strip tiller (which Lenz refers to officially as the “Thru-Flow strip-till deep bander”) is custom finished depending on the growing area, he notes, fitted with different blades or knives depending on user needs.
The tractor requirement to pull a strip tiller is a minimum of 160 horsepower with 3 hydraulic remotes, and capable of a fourth hose to relieve back pressure from the air delivery fan.

The other important consequence of population growth has been the expansion of the total area under cultivation and, because the area of land that can be handled by a farmer using simple hand tools is limited, the increase in population has led to a corresponding increase in the number of small subsistence farmers.
The grass filter strips are usually 2 metres wide at intervals of between 5 m and 20 m depending on the slope of the land, being closer on steep slopes.
Erosion is exacerbated by attempting to farm slopes that are too steep, cultivating up-and-down hill, continuous use of land for same crop without fallow or rotation, inadequate use of fertilisers, and compaction of the soil through the use of heavy machinery.

Maintenance of a non-competitive grass alley with a vegetation-free strip in the tree row is the orchard floor management standard for southern peach growers.
The vegetation-free strip in the tree row reduces competition for water and nutrients, provides some radiant heat from the soil surface during spring frost/freeze events, and removes winter hosts for catfacing insects.

Because of expansion of olive cultivated areas, the high cost of picking and the difficulties in using workers, machines are frequently used to facilitate picking operations.
Olive cultivation does not need continuous care and intensive labor, in contrast to other fruit trees; in fact olive crops tend to be neglected.
Cultivation is highest in the north, primarily in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Nablus, followed by production in Gaza and the southern West Bank.

Assessing Your Cropland to Protect Water Quality
Cropland filter strips must be at least 15 feet wide for flat to 10% slopes, 20 feet wide for 10% to 20% slopes, and 25 feet wide for 20% to 30% slopes.
Seedbeds are prepared on ridges and the ridges are rebuilt during cultivation.

 Conservation Tillage Methods
In earlier no-till planter designs without this soil loosening, the shoe was expected to both till and plant, resulting in damage to the shoe in compacted or rocky soils and in inadequate contact between the soil and the roots of the transplant.
The general practice in reduced tillage systems is to substitute herbicides, mowing, or flaming for cultivation to kill the existing vegetation before the vegetable crop is planted, but few options exist for weeds that germinate after the crop is planted.
In strip cultivation, it is usually possible to cultivate the tilled strip for the first 2 to 3 weeks after crop emergence or transplanting, but in other forms of reduced tillage, options are limited once the crop emerges, especially for crops where no post-emergent herbicides are registered.

Buffer strips have a wide range of potential benefits, such as creating new habitat for small mammals, invertebrates and birds; protecting habitats from sprays, fertiliser and cultivation; protecting archaeological or historic features from damage by mechanical operations, stabilising banks, protecting water courses and reducing diffuse pollution.
This rule does not apply to set-aside strips wider than 10 m, but the OELS and ELS buffer strips must be located between the set-aside strip and the environmental feature being buffered.
Buffer strips that have already been established are eligible if their management is not being paid for under another scheme, and they are not under permanent set-aside.

Even though a system of strip cultivation has been traditional in the area around Low Burnham, the site where the FSE crop is situated has been farmed as a discrete field for the last three years, with a single crop and associated management at any one time.
Historically the field contained five strips, four of these have been farmed as one for six years and the last strip was added three years ago.

In the past several years, equipment manufacturers have introduced specialized cultivators (sometimes referred to as high residue or chisel cultivators) which operate in both conventional and conservation tillage fields.
In strip tillage cotton, weed control and crop yield were similar for treatments which included: (a) banded herbicides coupled with chisel cultivation and (b) broadcast herbicides.
Chisel cultivation did not result in superior yields, which suggests that if weed control can be more economically supplied by broadcast herbicides, hooded/shielded sprayers, or less power intensive cultivation, the expense of these specialized cultivators may be difficult to justify.
