It was also among Oates's last films, as he died of a sudden heart attack the year after it was released.
The film's military-march instrumental theme was used in a TV commercial for Nissan trucks in December 2005 - January 2006.

Most of their interventions are as pleasant as fingernails on a chalkboard, and I also didn't get why after all this time (at least three years go by in the film), Stripes expresses such surprise when he's informed two thirds of the way through that he's actually a zebra.
The pacing is good, and his film reaches a visual pinnacle with the staging of the "Blue Moon Race", which is poetically tinted with the aforementioned color.

It's some sort of tradition now, some kind of sick trick: a collaboration of nitwits releases a "family" film as counter-programming against the glut of morose, adult-oriented awards-season drivel that seeps into middle America in the first few months of the New Year.

Purposeless slob Murray loses car (repossessed), apartment and girlfriend (thrown out) all in the same day, and on a whim joins the US Army; a decision he spends most of the film regretting.
Though the overall tone is as unquestioning of the virtues of the military life - discipline, duty, honour, etc - as was Private Benjamin, at least at its centre Murray is a genuine couldn't-give-a-shit character for the early '80s.
Reitman, who also originated Animal House and Meatballs, manages a reasonable success rate at pulling off the numerous verbal and sight gags with which the script is peppered.

Stripes settles in nicely with his hilarious barnyard buddies, voiced by Dustin Hoffman, Whoopi Goldberg, Snoop Dogg and Joe Pantoliano, who plays what press materials describe as a "deranged big-city pelican" - you know, a big-city pelican!
The interesting thing is, with the variety of animals on display, Racing Stripes really goes to town with the different types of shit that get flung around: bird shit from the air, horse shit on the ground, you get the idea.

Stripes is a zebra who thinks he's a horse who wants to be a racehorse, but his eponymous two-color tones leave him a pariah mocked by his rival, Trenton's Pride, as half horse, half fence.
His story seems initially to be Babe lite, a quaint moral fable uttered from the Clutch Cargo mouths of the crass menagerie of barnyard usual suspects (and voiced mostly by an onslaught of slumming B-listers).

On the one hand, this has been getting groans of disgruntlement from certain quarters of the press, but the fact is that this is purely what it intends to be – a feelgood children’s film – and nothing else.
This is billed as the “official film of Red Nose Day” and, whilst the more anal of film critics will complain that there is “not enough here to keep the adults entertained”, it’s a certainty that the under tens will embrace it with all their hearts.
Moving swiftly on, you could say this film is like “Little House on the Prairie” meets “Babe” meets “Rebel Without a Cause” with a sprinkling of “Fight Club” thrown in for good measure.

 Racing Stripes London Movie Review
If the trailers and posters for Racing Stripes remind you of Babe, it’s probably no coincidence, as the film uses the same blend of digitally-enhanced talking animals, live-action and animation.
When Stripes spots the neighbouring racetrack he’s immediately hooked and dreams of one day becoming a racehorse.
Muniz does a good job in the lead and there’s strong support from Goldberg, but the stand-outs are Dustin Hoffman and Joey ‘Pants’ Pantoliano as Goose, a deranged, fast-talking big-city Pelican who’s hiding out in the sticks until the heat dies down in the city.
