A stripper clip or charger, not to be confused with the revolver clip or plain clip, is a speedloader that holds several cartridges together in a single unit for easier loading of a firearm's magazine.
As of the early 21st century, firearms that accept stripper clips are rarely used for military purposes; stripper clips do remain in use for refilling the detachable magazines used on a variety of modern rifles, such as the M-16, as they are faster and easier to use than handloading.
A clip is a device that loads cartridges into a magazine, not the device which feeds cartridges into a firearm, which is the function of the magazine.

 Clips - Desolation
A clip or "stripper clip" holds cartidges that are to be fed (stripped) into the magazine-- sort of like speedloaders for semi-automatics.
An "en bloc clips" holds the cartridges together by their bases and their bodies; the clip and the rounds are inserted into the magazine as a unit.
There are also "half-moon clips" and "moon clips" for certain revolvers, however, this is the point at which (I believe) we begin to muddy the line between "clips" and the revolver "speedloader".

 Clip Information
The stripper clip (also known as a charger) is a piece of stamped metal or molded plastic that is designed to hold several cartridges together by their case rims, usually in a column or stack configuration.
In this method, the cartridges and clip are inserted as a unit into a fixed magazine within the rifle, and the clip is usually ejected by the rifle upon firing or chambering the last round.
The difference between a moon clip and a speedloader is that the cylinder may be closed with the moon clip attached, whereas the speedloader must be removed before the cylinder can be closed.

A stripper clip fed five shot bolt action rifle is obviously slower than a semi-auto, but is fast enough for most situations and the slower rate of fire conserves ammo.
If you lose your spare mags, the rifle also stripper clip feeds from the top of the action as with the Mauser, with five shot clips, so the mag can be filled or topped off without single loading the magazine.
Stripper clip feeding is faster than changing magazines, but clips limited to ten rounds.

Magazines is the term, friends and neighbors, not "clips," unless you are referring to stripper clips (ie, as used in the old Garand).
Stripper clips are simply a piece of metal or similar, made to fit around the rims or rimmed rounds, or in the machined part or rimless rounds.
To load a weapon with stripper clips (this is how to load the german Karabiner K98) you open the bolt, place the stripper clip with the cartridges over the magazine opening, it's placed in some sort of holder i think, and you push the cartridges into the magazine, and discard the stripper clip.

 Clips vs Magazines
Although many people use the terms "clip" and "magazine" interchangeably, there is a significant difference between the two.
Clips simply hold together a number of cartridges by the groove around the base of the casing for easy loading into a magazine.
The rounds are held together by the force of the walls pressing the rounds together, and by a (usually) spring-loaded follower that presses up against the rounds, trying to feed them to the top of the magazine, and from there, into the chamber of the weapon that the magazine has been inserted into.

With a stripper clip, you load the rounds into the 'clip' and load the magazine from the top by pushing the rounds down into the magazine.
One is a device that slides over the top of a magazine and allows the rounds of ammunition to be inserted from the stipper clip into the magazine with one push instead of each individual round being loaded one at a time.
The other form of stripper clip guide is machined directly into the top of a firearm's receiver and allows the rounds of ammunition to be forced into the firearm's fixed, or non-removeable, magazine, such as what is found on old military mausers.
