Reduction of lamp strobing effects in a reproducing apparatus - Patent 4355891
As the photoreceptor passes beneath the fixed aperture and is exposed by the projected light image, these cyclic light variations may, depending on factors such as process speed and aperture width, result in a periodic spatial variation in exposure on the photoreceptor in the direction of motion of the photoreceptor beneath the aperture.
The strobing effect, however, is accentuated or mitigated, depending upon the type of document being copied and the process speed of the copier.
The strobing phenomenon is therefore, seen to exist in lesser or greater degrees depending upon the particular reproducing system in use.

On several nights between 9 and 11 pm I saw some apparent star-like objects on the east or west horizon which seemed to strobe in multiple colors.

The object did not show much in the photo, even though 10x optical zoom, because the strobing light was not much bigger than a small point of light.

 Strobing
In the visualizations with more intermittent strobing, in the words of one viewer, "it looks like there are a bunch of clones running after one another." The further apart the sprites, the harder it seems it is to make the mental leap that this image is sampling the motion in time.
Therefore, the spacing of sprites is a crucial factor in the efficacy of a strobing visualization.
Both methods lose the spatial context of simple strobing, but this is less of an issue in comics, where the lack of context is made explicit.

Getting It On Film - #4 - Strobing
Strobing refers to the visual effect produced on the screen when the illusion of smooth motion breaks down, and on screen action appears instead as a series of stuttering jumps.
Strobing is also sometimes called "image judder", and gets its name from its similarity to the effect produced by a stroboscope, flashing at a slow enough rate to produce a series of flashing static poses.
Strobing can be caused in a large-format film by moving either the camera or the subject too fast and causing a broken and jerky motion.

Conclusion and Future Work   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
At the same time, we have noted that intelligent strobing works in some situations better than others, and so an automated system should be interactive, letting the user choose a point on the continuum of timing vs. spatial clarity.
Adjusting the layout of frames on the page, changing the size and placement of the "gutters," and experimenting with non-rectangular panels are all part of the everyday life of the comic artist, yet the automation of these tasks are formidable research obstacles.
We've discussed how some video sequences are more suited to strobing techniques and others to comics, and an interesting research project would be the formalization of these criteria and ways to automate it's detection.

P3D Re: IMAX Window & Strobing
Live footage has less strobing because the images are motion blurred (depending on the shutter speed) and therefor appear smoother to our brain.
While a jet fly-by has less strobing (our brain knows a jet is fast and tends to correct any visual problems), a ballerina might show heavy strobing and a snail crawling across the screen hardly shows any strobing.
70mm projections show less strobing simply because the smaller screen size and therefor the global difference between a point on an image and the same point in the following image of the sequence is smaller as in a 15/70mm projection.

Effects of Continuous and Strobing Laser Glare on Performance in a Visually Simulated Flight Task - Storming Media
This report describes a study in which a low cost, medium-fidelity virtual cockpit environment was used to measure the effects of strobing vs. continuous laser exposure on performance in a visual flight task.
Results suggest that strobing laser glare poses a legitimate threat to visual orientation control, that this threat might rival or eclipse that posed by continuous laser sources, and that further examination of the threat is needed.
Strobing laser glare may present a threat to aircrew.

Functionality and flexibility for controlling numerous strobe controllers are exposed in the VIs; all of the strobe controller VIs have the ability to specify the com port (i.e., “COM1”) and an output number, either 1 or 2 (for the second output of a dual output controller).
To protect internal mechanisms of the strobe light, it is often necessary for the controller to reduce the total energy consumed by the LEDs.

 LostCircuits, Memory Reviews
Differential strobing comes with a legacy, though, which is the requirement for additional pins.
The strobes are forwarded along with the data and define the data valid window or Data-I. It is somewhat intuitive that data moving in opposite directions are better synchronized with strobes that are running along with them on separate lines than with a bi-directional strobe, which is comparable with a one size fits all solution.
Therefore, the advantages and disadvantages of unidirectional strobes have to be weighed against the bi-directional differential strobes.
