  Vic Camp - Strombolian eruptions
However, true strombolian activity is characterized by short-lived, explosive outbursts of pasty lava ejected a few tens or hundreds of meters into the air.
Strombolian activity from Mt. Etna in October 2002.
In one week it grew to a height of 100 m from the accumulation of bombs and lapilli, and it was raining down finer fragments that burned and eventually covered the village of Paricutin.

Strombolian eruption - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Strombolian eruptions are relatively low-level volcanic eruptions, named after the Italian volcano named Stromboli, where such eruptions consist of rhythmical ejection of incandescent cinder, lapilli and lava bombs to altitudes of tens to hundreds of meters.
Strombolian eruptions are long-lasting, from few hours to days to several years; eg.

 photos of strombolian eruptions
Strombolian eruptions are discrete explosions (called Strombolian explosions, Strombolian bursts etc.) of relatively fluid lava from a single vent.
When the discrete Strombolian explosions during particularly violent phases merge into sustained jets of liquid lava, these eruptions are called lava fountains.
Powerful strombolian activity such as on the photo below left is often accompanied by the emission of lava flows.

While Strombolian activity from the summit vent of the intracrater cone culminated in about nine hours of spectacular Strombolian activity with jets several hundred meters high, the new lava flow advanced in up to five lobes a few hundred m downslope, slowing at the base of the SE Crater cone.
Strombolian activity at SE Crater was quite intense on the evening of 5 October when lava began to spill down its eastern flank.
Mild Strombolian ctivity is occurring from a small conelet in the summit crater of the intracrater cone.

 USGS Photo Glossary: Strombolian eruption
Strombolian eruptions are characterized by the intermittent explosion or fountaining of basaltic lava from a single vent or crater.
The word strombolian is derived from the volcano Stromboli, one of the Aeolian Islands north of Sicily.
Other volcanoes that often exhibit strombolian activity include Etna (Italy), Pacaya (Guatemala), and Erebus (Antarctica).

Etna: Eruptions from 1971 to present   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
Strombolian activity in the lowermost part of the eruptive fissure system continued until 23 March, building a small pyroclastic cone, and minor amounts of lava were extruded, forming a sluggish flow that stopped 2 km S of Randazzo.
On 22-23 September the level of eruptive activity was particularly high, with continuous Strombolian explosions and lava outflow at the NE Crater, Strombolian activity at the floor of the Bocca Nuova, and mild explosive activity at the SE Crater.
Intracrater Strombolian activity continued at the Voragine and the Bocca Nuova through August 1989, while the SE Crater produced Strombolian activity at fluctuating levels, culminating on 15 April in the emission of a small lava flow (300 m long) from the SE Crater.

Strombolian eruptions are similar to Hawaiian eruptions in some ways, and different in others.
Note that one important difference between Strombolian and Hawaiian eruptions is that the Strombolian eruptions are episodic - there is some finite time interval required for the bubbles to rise and coalesce prior to exploding.

At Punatekahi, two coalescing scoria cones were formed by "dry" (strombolian) eruptions, generated when large gas bubbles rose and burst through a lava pond formed within the cone.
Grainsize and vesicularity data from one of the cones indicates that discharge rate was generally low, allowing a dense crust to form on the surface of the ponded lava.

Geotimes - April 2005 - Vesuvius’ next eruption
Thus, he says, determining what is “typical” and likely future behavior at Vesuvius is “exceedingly difficult.” It is those questions that a new model, developed by a team led by Andrea Borgia, a volcanologist at the European Development and Research Agency in Rome, tries to answer.
According to Borgia et al.’s model, published in the Feb. 2 Geophysical Research Letters, a strong Strombolian eruption — a voluminous lava fountain with occasional explosions — is the most likely type of eruption to occur at Vesuvius in the short-term.
This type of eruption is not as risky to people living in the area, Borgia says, because there is usually ample time to get out of the way of the lava flows.
