Topic: Strozzi

  Barbara Strozzi
Barbara Strozzi is one of the better known female composers of the Baroque era, probably because she had a such a large musical output, most of which has survived to the present day.
Barbara Strozzi was born in Venice on August 6, 1619.
Her use of the name Strozzi was first documented in 1638 in "Le Veglie de' Signori Unisoni." This publication, which describes the meetings of the Accademia degli Unisoni, an academy founded in 1637 by Guilio Strozzi, was dedicated to Barbara Strozzi.

In about 1610 he was allowed to leave his community to look after his sick and widowed mother, and after she died in 1630 he is said to have been pressurized to return, this accounting for his move in 1631 to Venice where he spent the rest of his life).
Strozzi was successful and prolific in both Genoa and Venice, painting portraits and allegorical and genre scenes (often of musicians) as well as religious works.
Strozzi's interpretation of these trends was highly original and combined with his thorough knowledge of other currents in art, from the Lombard school to the diffusion of Caravaggio's style.

Strozzi’s singing was highly praised by those who had the good fortune to hear her, but her public career was established not through performance, but through publishing.
Despite her father’s associations with opera, Strozzi wrote none: her works are chamber works, and the cantata, with its succession of passages in aria and recitative style, was opera’s chamber music equivalent.
As in Caccini’s canzonettas, the theme in Strozzi’s secular works is almost invariably the suffering caused by unrequited love, presented across the full gamut of moods, from ironic mockery to weeping melancholy Strozzi pays very close and detailed attention to her texts.

In 1628 she was made his only heir, so it is apparent that Strozzi was very close to her father, which aided her education, publicity, and subsequent success.
It was assumed that Strozzi’s mother was a courtesan, as these women were free to educate themselves in arts and social matters.

Bernardo Strozzi was one of the most influential Italian painters of the early 1600s, especially in Genoa and Venice.
In 1610 Strozzi was given permission to leave the monastery in order to support his sick widowed mother and unmarried sister as a painter.
Although he drew on the great variety of styles available in the busy cosmopolitan center of Genoa, Strozzi was perhaps most profoundly influenced by Caravaggio and the work of Caravaggio’s students.
