Structural analysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Structural analysis comprises the set of physical laws and mathematics required to study and predict the behavior of structures.
There are three approaches to the analysis: the mechanics of materials approach (also know as strength of materials), the elasticity theory approach (which is actually a special case of the more general field of continuum mechanics), and the finite element approach.
For the analysis of entire systems, this approach can be used in conjunction with statics, giving rise to the method of sections and method of joints for truss analysis, moment distribution for small rigid frames, and portal frame and cantilever method for large rigid frames.

Structural engineers ensure the buildings or bridges are built to be strong enough to against the environmental loading (e.g gravity, wind and earthquake load).
Reinforced concrete, composite structure, timber, masonry and structural steel designs are the general structural design courses that will be introduce in the next level of the education of structural engineering.
The structural analysis courses which include structural mechanics, structural dynamics and structural failure analyses are designed to build up the fundamental analysis skills and theories for structural engineering students.

 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS
The first step in FE analysis is to model/idealise the geometry of the structure for the particular requirements/goals of the structural analysis on hand.
Transforming the geometry of the real structure into the geometrical model for finite element analysis is a complex process in which engineering knowledge and expertise relating to various aspects of structural behaviour/analysis, computer software and hardware facilities and their limitations have to be considered.
In the next stage of analysis process, the finite elements to be used and the meshing pattern (including size) of the FE model and the boundary conditions are to be decided/modelled.

The analysis was further complicated by the fact that cable-stayed bridges are nonlinear structures.

Structural Analysis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The software analysis developed by BPP utilises a unique hybrid analytic/finite element computational method which is capable of correctly accounting for the structural behaviour of helical and cylindrical layers and of interlayer forces in such structures.

Failure analysis is the art of explaining unexpected, premature, or catastrophic structural damage through identification of all contributory factors and the root cause.
Failure analysis uses stress analysis and strain gage testing to reveal the stress state in the region of failure initiation.
With the incorporation of strain gage testing, failure analysis identifies the source of fatigue damage that, for example, caused a pressure vessel to crack or fan blades to break.

The structural analysis of oligo- and polysaccharides poses some unique problems since, unlike the amino acids in peptides or nucleosides in DNA, sugar residues can have different ring structures, be linked at several different positions and may form not only linear, but also branched and cyclic structures.
Using results from component and linkage analysis all possible permutations of sequences and anomeric configurations are generated.
