formula, in chemistry. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
Formulas of compounds are used in writing the equations (see chemical equations) that represent chemical reactions.
Structural formulas are often simplified so that they can be written on a single line; the simplified formulas are often called semistructural formulas.
The semistructural formula for dimethyl ether may be written CH Here the O is placed between the two carbon atoms to show that the carbons are bonded to the oxygen.

 Representing Organic Compounds: Structural Formulas.
Because of the complexity of the structure of many organic compounds, as well as the importance of structure in organic chemistry, the development of shorthand methods for representing the structures of organic compounds has been almost mandatory in order to allow the drawing of structures in a reasonable amount of space and time.
The different representations of tributylcarbinol found in organic chemistry are the complete structural formula (a), the connectivity formula (b), the line formula (c), and the condensed structural formula (d).

  The Importance of Structural Formulas
It is necessary to draw structural formulas for organic compounds because in most cases a molecular formula does not uniquely represent a single compound.
Different compounds having the same molecular formula are called isomers, and the prevalence of organic isomers reflects the extraordinary versatility of carbon in forming strong bonds to itself and to other elements.
In condensed structural formulas the bonds to each carbon are omitted, but each distinct structural unit (group) is written with subscript numbers designating multiple substituents, including the hydrogens.

  Structural formula Summary
H H. Structural formulas are exceedingly important to chemists, especially organic chemists, since they make it possible to design schemes of synthesis and to predict the properties of compounds.
The writing of structural formulas was not possible until at least some chemists were convinced that chemical formulas were more than a convenience in representing compounds, and that they could actually show the structure of atoms in a molecule.
Note that for organic compounds, line drawings of structural formula are assumed to have carbon atoms at the vertices and termini of all line segments not marked with the atomic symbol of an element (other than carbon).

 Formulas
Three dimensional formulas usually take one of three forms: a) structural formulas drawn to give a three-dimensional view, b) computer-generated drawing used specifically by x-ray crystallographers and usually called ORTEP diagrams, and c) molecular models, usually generated by computer.
In part (b), the structural formula is condensed somewhat by placing the atoms together in groups.
This type of line formula is frequently used by organic chemists because of the complexity of the formulas of many organic compounds.

The structural formula of a chemical compound is a graphical representation of the molecular structure showing how the atoms are arranged.
A structural formula indicates the arrangements of atoms in a way that a chemical formula cannot.

 Structural Formulas
Structural formulas have particular value in the study of organic chemistry.
The fact that carbon can bond in different types of arrangements, even when the same number of carbon atoms is involved, leads to a situation where different organic molecules can have the same molecular formula and still be different compounds by having their atoms arranged in different ways, as you have just seen.
Structural isomers are compounds with the same number and type of atoms in their molecules, but have them bonded to one another in a different arrangement.

(The bent formula (where the resultant is not zero) would very likely have a dipole moment greater than zero.) In the case of water we have to eliminate the linear structural formula since this formula says that the dipole moment of water should be zero, contrary to the experimental observation.
Although structural formulae are generally a much more informative way of representing a molecule than the ordinary molecular formulae, they still suffer from a great disadvantage.
