A game of Structural Optimization by Andrej and Elena Cherkaev
The best strategy for the force is to be applied in a certain way and the best strategy for the structure is to resist that force.
The described strategy fails when the structure s1 designed against the load f1 shows less strength if the load f2 is applied, and vice versa: the structure s2 designed against the load f2 shows less strength if the load f1 is applied
Here the strategy is different: an optimal design offers equal resistance against a class of equally harmful loadings, rather then the extremal resistance to a single loading.

Opponent Modeling in No Limit Texas Hold 'em
Modern Hold 'em poker games have a betting structure utilizing what is called a "blind structure." In the blind structure a button is passed around the table one seat at a time counter-clockwise after each hand.
For example, a person who is in a class that only sees 10% of flops can be assumed to be playing hands that are very strong starting hands, and thus we can weight our probabilities for which hand the opponent has towards the high end of the spectrum.
The purpose of this project is develop a No Limit Texas Hold 'em opponent modeler than can be adaptive over a period of poker play.

Chaos in Models, Life Cycles, and Strategies
I use chaos as a metaphor in two ways: to see the structure of a piece of code (the Chaos model) and to see the sequence of events within a process (the Chaos life cycle).
The Chaos Strategy helps to answer the question, "what line of code should I write next?" It is a "middle-out" strategy that presumes that the process has a chaotic complxity.
I use these metaphors to show why the middle levels of the project are important (the Complexity Gap) and to discuss the need for a systematic strategy (the Chaos strategy).

Chandler's study of the adoption of the multidivisional organization structure by fifty of the largest companies in the United States, and his detailed examination of four of the pioneers of that revolutionary structural form, led him to develop his highly influential strategy/structure thesis.
In this way, we have defined the structure of the organization, not in terms of how sub-units are composed and decomposed but as a cluster of statuses and associated roles that collectively define the social structure of a company within which its core management processes are embedded.
Despite the obvious fact that organizations are social structures that shape and are shaped by the relationships among actors within their social systems, organizational analysis has historically focussed on abstract generalizations of relationships represented by its formal structure.

The case is made for a triangular alignment between the triumvirate of governance structure, transaction, and resource attributes and it is demonstrated how the identity and strategy of a particular firm influences how the firm’s resources interact with the transaction and how the firm chooses to govern it.
The institutional structure of production comes into being under the influence of forces determining the interrelationships between the costs of transacting and the costs of organizing....But it is a theoretical scheme that incorporates these interrelationships that I believe will make my approach to The Nature of the Firm operational (1988: 47).
This underscores that there are differences among firms in the realm of production which need to be recognized in trying to better understand the institutional structure of production (also Foss and Langlois 1999).
