The Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies - Commentary - The Evolving Canadian Army
By opting for a medium-weight force structure, by not replacing the Leopard tank on a one-for-one basis, and by eviscerating its artillery regiments, the army is quietly dropping all pretensions to being a combat-capable force with sufficient depth to “fight alongside the best against the best” in anything other than very short engagements.
These army simulations tested the efficacy of MGS in a variety of combat and near-combat scenarios, concluding that flank screening and convoy escort were acceptable applications for the MGS.
Both the Minister and the senior army leadership should be praised for the speed with which the project was approved, and for committing themselves to delivering a modern, sustainable army that is increasingly inter-operable with its evolving American counterpart.

Since the winning Army Air Force of the last war was split from the Army by the Unification Act of 1947 and made independent, the Army has become more air-minded than ever.
While the Army does not operate its own fighters, bombers, and big transports, every soldier in the field—from Private to General—is keenly aware of what air cover means to the troops, vulnerable if the enemy controls the air.

We must balance the Army's resource demand against the resources available and, given the limited flexibility the Army has, that almost certainly means a change in structure and probably means some reduction in regular force personnel.
Here again, structural change is necessary to produce a certain type of structure that has a greater capability but with fewer resources demanded.
We have had the model for years that the Reserve structure is largely a mirror image of the regular force, albeit at a lower level of readiness.

The Mississippi River levees are designed to protect the alluvial valley against the project flood by confining flow to the leveed channel, except where it enters the natural flwater areas or is diverted purposely into the floodway areas.

The first two features completed were the low-sill and overbank structures, the former to pass low and medium flows from the Mississippi to the Atchafalaya River in a controlled manner, and the latter to pass flood flows to the Atchafalaya in conformance with the flood control plan.

 The Regimental System
We in the Canadian Army proclaim ourselves, perhaps not in such direct terms, to uphold the traditions and customs of the Victorian British Army and what we contend are historical precedents of the regimental system.
Canadian reserve units have a unique view of the Regimental system and their own developed sense of belonging to a regiment rather than to a subordinate primary group.
By this means, each Regiment protected the honour of the Regiment within the Army, the honour of the Army, and by extension the monarch (or, as in a Constitutional Canada, the nation, her government and her people).
