Trinity House | Interactive | Gallery | Strumble Head Lighthouse
Strumble Head Lighthouse stands imposingly on Ynysmeicl (St. Michael's Island), an islet to the west of Fishguard, separated from the mainland by a very narrow gap through which the sea boils and froths in stormy weather.
The station was built in 1908 by Trinity House for the greater safety of sea traffic between Ireland and the new Fishguard Harbour which is located behind cliffs and a breakwater three miles to the east.
A massive clockwork mechanism rotated it, driven by a quarter-ton weight which, suspended on a cable, dropped gradually down a cylinder running from top to bottom through the tower and had to be re-wound every 12 hours.

The topography of Strumble Head is well suited to obtain good observations of seabird movements as it is only about 60 to 70 feet above sea level.
If you intend visiting Strumble to do some birding then I cannot emphasise strongly enough that you need to arrive there at the crack of dawn as the first couple of hours of daylight are likely to prove the most productive, although I would advise birders to spend the whole day there.

Walk #391: Strumble Head to Newport
This walk was quite strenuous with many ascents and descents to be made, even on the first section from Strumble Head.
I was not in much of a hurry, and so I decided to have a second pint and relax a little, which with hindsight may have been a mistake.
By this stage I was feeling decidedly fuzzy in my head, so I was not in a massively talkative mood as I was concentrating on the walk itself.

Strumble Head lighthouse stands imposingly on St Michaels Island, an islet separated from the mainland of Pembrokeshire, Wales by a narrow gap through which the sea boils and froths in stormy weather.
The drive approaching the lighthouse was several miles of narrow twisting lanes, hemmed in by high banks, across farm tracks and finally out on to the headland.
We were very lucky with the weather, a chilly early breeze in the morning gave way to beautiful blue skies and warm sunshine that made some quite stunning photographs as the evening drew nearer.
