Struwwelpeter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Struwwelpeter (slovenly Peter), is an illustrated collection of stories intended for children.
While Struwwelpeter is somewhat notorious for its perceived brutal treatment of the erring children, it has been influential on many later children's books, most notably Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; in German, Max und Moritz bears a strong resemblance in style to Struwwelpeter.
Instead of simply being a dirty boy, Struwwelpeter is a monster of sorts, arriving as a baby brought by a stork and already sporting talon-like nails and hideous hair.

Struwwelpeter, whose name was taken from a book of old German fairytales, was originally formed in 2003 from the remnants of the dissipated bootlegging scene 'The Treatment' in Cheltenham and Bristol.
The first Struwwelpeter CD "You're All So Precious" combined the talents of resident loopmeisters Peter Philips and Alison Eire, along with John Harris throwing guitar samples into the mix.
The album was produced and fronted by Ben Mitchell, who adopted the moniker Struwwelpeter for his two subsequent albums "Rapeseed" (2004) and "Agnosticaust" (2006).

 Who is Struwwelpeter?
Heinrich Hoffmann, a Frankfurt 'medical man of the lunatic asylum', wrote and illustrated The Struwwelpeter (ShockHeaded Peter) more than 150 years ago because he couldn't find anything on the shelves to fire the imagination of his children.
Towards Christmas in the year 1844, when my eldest son was three years old, I went to town with the intention to buy as a present for him a picture book, which should be adapted to the little fellow's powers of comprehension.
A story, invented on the spur of the moment, illustrated with a few touches of the pencil and humorously related, will calm the little antagonist, dry his tears, and allow the medical man to do his duty.

Struwwelpeter is Staake's adaptation of Der Struwwelpeter, a teach-kids-morality-through-fear book written 160 years ago by Heinrich Hoffman.
When Staake was a child, he was exposed to the original book's, and never forgot its frightening and gory illustrations of mayhem and punishment.
Staake's Struwwelpeter is both a faithful adaptation of the original and an inspired reexamination.

The name Struwwelpeter was no original part of the title, but added for the third German edition.
The depiction of "the civilizing process" of children in Der Struwwelpeter is educational in the best tradition of macabre humour: thumbs are cut away with big scissors for sucking one's thumbs, small faults are punished by death, and in the story of 'Little Pauline' a girl who plays with matches burns into ashes.
In the 1960s in Germany Slovenly Peter was a rioting student in Der Struwwelpeter neu frisiert oder lästige Ge-schichten und dolle Bilder für Bürger bis 100 Jahre by Eckart and Rainer Hachfeld (1969).

Struwwelpeter appears as an example of the didactic children's book, in that each of its stories contains a little moral lesson for the reader.
Modern childcare ideas reject the violence and ridicule that Struwwelpeter uses to sanction negative behavior, substituting positive reinforcement of desirable behavior and gentler, non-violent sanctions for behavior which is not condoned.
Further, some of the specific behaviors that Struwwelpeter sanctions, such as pickiness in eating and thumb-sucking are not at issue today, at least not in the severe form that they are in Struwwelpeter (Savelsberg 195).

The humour of the verses and the illustrations set the book apart from other didactic children's literature of the time, although it did not question the cruelty and sadism ubiquitous in children's books and fairy tales of the early nineteenth-century.

In reference to the advice of most readers of Struwwelpeter to NOT let children read this book, I would like to quote Terry Pratchet: "...it was much earlier than that when most people forgot that the very oldest stories are, sooner or later, about blood.
Later on they tookt he blood out to make the stories more acceptable to children, or at least to the people who read them to children rather than the children themselves (who, on the whole, are quite keen on blood provided it's being shed by the deserving.
The reviewer attacked the book as glorifying the murder and debasement of children, and even talked about being unable to eat any blue-colored foods for years as a result of trauma caused by the blueberry scene.
