On the same expedition, Sturt also named the Strzelecki Desert after the eccentric Polish explorer, Paul Edmund de Strzelecki, who was the first European to climb and name Mount Kosciusko.
This made Innamincka an important centre in the region, until shifting sand during a 1930s drought closed the Strzelecki Track, and an alternate route was developed from Birdsville to the Marree rail link (the Birdsville Track).
The Innamincka township was deserted until 1971, when a store and hotel were erected near the ruins of the nursing home.

fuscus was found throughout the Strzelecki Desert east and south of the Strzelecki Creek in South Australia and in an isolated group of dunes south-east of the Diamantina River in south-west Queensland.
Populations were located in a variety of sand dune habitats (excepting those dominated by Triodia) throughout these areas, implying that the species is a habitat-generalist with a preference for a sandy substrate.
However, the results suggest that the presence of consolidated dunes and perennial vegetation are important for the maintenance of stable populations.
