Stuart Saves His Family - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stuart Saves His Family is a 1995 comedy film directed by Harold Ramis, and based on a series of popular Saturday Night Live sketches from the early-to-mid 1990s.
The movie tracks the adventures of would-be self-help guru Stuart Smalley, a creation of writer/comedian Al Franken, as he attempts to save both his deeply troubled family and his low-rated cable access show.
Though the film did not fare well at the box office, the response from critics was pretty evenly mixed.

Stuart's life, like his cable-TV show, is populated chiefly by grown children from dysfunctional families: co-dependents, rage-aholics, overeaters, debtors, adult children of alcoholics - "You know," Stu says, "my people." The movie chronicles its characters' attempts to overcome their past and to escape from their respective demons.
No matter what Stuart tries in order to "save" his family, his efforts always fail so that he is left staring into his trademark mirror and attempting to cure himself.
Stuart Saves His Family is an enjoyable and poignant portrayal of a dysfunctional family.

The plot is pretty simple, as Stuart Smalley (Franken) has to deal with having his cable-access show canceled while various family crises erupt — fist fights, a hunting accident, an intervention — almost all of them created by his father’s alcoholism.
Stuart must also confront past traumas, including a family photograph in front of the famous “Hollywood” sign that must be taken at any cost, traffic be damned.
The key is that the movie gives Stuart some context — a family that provides many, many reasons for him to desperately need those daily affirmations — and the opportunity to actually make some progress in his endless spiritual and mental-health journeys.

Stuart is the newest super un-hero of the '90s, the over-eating son of an alcoholic Everyman who by some miracle pulls off the impossible and survives his own childhood.
There's a genuinely tragic side to Stuart's character, and for the movie to work the filmmakers have to keep it in balance with the comedy so that the pathos of his life doesn't kill all the laughs.

Stuart's dysfunction and family life are far too real for a character out of SNL, and people expecting a madcap comedy won't be rewarded.
Most of Stuart's show segments are worth watching as well, which shouldn't be surprising as they are the essential material upon which the Smalley character was based in the first place.

Al Franken was very watchable in the role of Stuart Smalley - the (mostly) positive title character who goes on a journey of discovery and learns that despite his best efforts and intentions, the only person he has the power to save is himself.
And while it's clear that Stuart isn't going to succeed in everything he attempts (his father is far too content with the way he is to want to change, even with the threat of jail hanging over his head), there are some small successes that make it worth the effort.

Stuart is such a broadly caricatured figure--sleeveless sweaters, overcoifed sandy hair, soothingly earnest voice that always seems to be on the gurgly edge of a sob--that he provides a sort of Brechtian distance on the relative realism with which his family is depicted.
