The Stuart was an American light tank of World War II in use with British and Commonwealth forces prior to the entry of the USA into the European theatre.
The only place where the Stuart was still adequate was the Pacific Theater, as Japanese tanks were both relatively rare and, when met, were weakly armored and armed.
Japanese infantry were poorly equipped with anti-tank weapons, and tended to attack tanks using close-assault tactics.

The M3 Stuart, known to the British as Stuart I or Honey (it was a "Honey" of a tank), was an evolution of the light tank M2A4, which incorporated a trailing idler suspension to decrease ground pressure and improve weight distribution, a lengthened hull superstructure rear, and also thicker armor.
The external difference between gasoline and diesel-powered Stuarts is the difference in length of the air intake pipes leading from the air cleaners on the rear hull to the engine compartment.
M3A3, or Stuart V, was modified to have a sloped hull similar to the light tank M5 Stuart.

 Stuart; not well known but part of the team
The Stuart was named after the legendary Major-General J E B "Jeb" Stuart who fought on the Confederate side in the American Civil War.
The US M3 Light Tank was named "General Stuart" by the British after they took possession of the first lend lease M3s in June of 1941.
After their experience with the M3 Light Tank, the Americans designed the M3A1 to remedy some of the short-comings of the earlier model, and the changes began with the first new vehicles in May of '42.

By the way, on the Stuart, I have very dimly in mind that when I was a very young boy there was a WWII cartoon book series that detailed the adventures of the crew of a Stuart tank.
The tank commander was supposed to be a descendant of JEB.
And back to tanks the Grant was the British designation for the Tank Medium M3 with the British designed turret (no commanders cupola with its MG - the vehicle was regarded as high enough - plus bustle to fit British radio equipment) and British stowage (including movement of radio equipment, ammunition practice, etc).

The tank,with an M5A1 Stuart and 160 other WWII vehicles, took part in a parade past Buckingham Palace behind over 10,000 marching veterans who took the salute from Her majesty Queen Elizabeth.
This was the first time since the victory parade in 1945 that tanks had driven down the red tarmac of The Mall.

The M3 Stuart Light Tank carried a 37mm main gun and three.30 cal. machine guns mounted coaxial with the main gun, in a ball mount, and outside on the turret.
The Stuart was fast and reliable but was too light for European Theater combat in WW II although it did better in the Pacific Theater where the Japanese had only a few light tanks.
The M5A1 Stuart was the successor to the M3 Stuart series.

The tank is made by 21st Century Toys and is available at ToysRUs and KB Kids stores, amongst others.
The tank is marked as the 3rd tank of B Company (B-3), which in this case is a reference to my last name (B - that's right, just B) and the number of people in my family.
The two visible members of the tank crew are old fuzzhead GI Joes w/ their flocking removed (I prefer softheads) The heads are on Cotswold bodies (the old "pale" bodies, as the new tan bodies don't even remotely match the skin tone of the heads).

When CMH acquired the tanks for display in Army museums, the M3A1 was moved to an Army depot in Anniston, Ala., and later shipped to the Army Reserve's 88th Regional Support Command at Fort Snelling, Minn.
The most notable use of the tank was in the North African campaign, beginning in November 1942.
The entire Stuart series of light tanks was replaced in 1944 by the M24 General Chaffee tank.
