Telfes im Stubai is a small village in the Tirol (Tyrol) region of Austria.
The main road (183) down the valley passes south of the village to Neustift where a smaller road continues to the end of the valley and the Stubaier Gletscher with all year skiing.
The Elfer Lifte is in Neustift and there are lifts on the Stubai Glacier at the end of the valley.

On Tuesday, June 8, I took a bus from Innsbruck to Milders (in the Stubaital, or Stubai valley) and walked several hours up a side valley to Oberiss.
From there it was about 1.5 hours to the Franz Senn hut where I shared the winter room with a gentleman from England hoping to do some scrambles and a hiker from Poland.
After waiting out some unsettled weather over the weekend I took the Stubai Gletscher ski area cable car up to the top late in the afternoon on Sunday and spent Monday through Thursday continuing on Part 2.

I understood that camping in the Alps was not allowed and so I decided to use the network of huts that exists up in the Alps.
So, I settled on an area of the Alps known as the Stubai Alps just south of Innsbruck.
The hostel was "alright", but the self catering facilities were poor (and you had to pay 50cents to use some seriously underpowered cooking rings).

Until recently multi-millenial tree-ring chronologies were missing in the Eastern Alps.
During the last years about 490 subfossil logs were sampled at 26 sites near the tree line of the central Eastern Alps (Hohe Tauern, Zillertal Alps, Ötztal and Stubai Alps, Ortler group; above 2000 m a.s.l.) for the construction of such a chronology.
These gaps were bridged by the synchronisation with other alpine, previously floating chronologies from the Austrian and Swiss Alps (Dachstein, Höhenbiel, Grächen).

As this is a hut to hut tour, I became a member of the Austrian Alpine Club (30 pounds) which gave me preferential treatment and reduced costs at the huts, plus mountain rescue insurance.
The youth hostel in Innsbruck was clean but busy, a bed was 10 Euros and Fruhstuck 4 Euros.

Neustift, with many facilities and a swimming pool, is a mountain resort in the middle of the Stubai valley.
Lower than their western counterparts in France and Switzerland, the Stubai and Öztal Alps generally enjoy better weather and allow for good peak bashing with some exciting climbing and scrambling, all in a single day from the campsite.
