Stuckism is an art movement that was founded in 1999 in Britain by Billy Childish and Charles Thomson to promote figurative painting in opposition to conceptual art.
The name Stuckism was coined by Thomson in response to a comment, made by artist Tracey Emin to Childish, then her boyfriend, which he had recorded in a poem as:
An international symposium on Stuckism is booked for October 2006 at the Liverpool John Moores University during the Liverpool Biennial.

The photographers also state that they are a Remodernist group, meaning that their aspiration is to establish "a new spirituality in art".

"Stuckism" is a self-bestowed name conveying an attitude of defiance: it is similar to those names of movements which, while at face value seem derogatory and ridiculous, become more widely known as praiseworthy (like Fauvism, Primitivism, Art Brut).
Stuckism stands as much for what it opposes—postmodern conceptual and installation art, etc.—as for what it champions: a spiritual renewal in art, particularly painting, following the lead of its prime exemplar Van Gogh.
Stuckism, for those who identify or empathise with it, is a long overdue breath of fresh air—the first overt manifestation of the rising storm that will one day blow down the stale, empty house of postmodernism.

Charles Thomson (artist) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thomson coined the name "Stuckism" after an insult from Tracey Emin to ex-boyfriend Childish that he was "stuck", which Childish had recorded in a poem.
In 2004 he reported Saatchi to the OFT (Office of Fair Trading) for alleged unfair trading practices in the art world: the complaint was not upheld.
In June 2006 he wrote to the British Prime Minister Tony Blair asking him to intervene in the case of Stuckist artist Michael Dickinson, who was facing a possible 3 year jail sentence in Turkey for exhibiting a satirical collage of the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan.

STUCK IN LA: It's OK to be Stuck!
Stuckism is that little voice in the back of your head that says, "something's wrong here".
The greatest danger with the very word "Stuckism", and its assertions against the status quo of the fine art world, is the very real threat of being deemed "conservative" or "reactionary".
For generations it has been the mecca for creative types of all stripes, but most who come here are lost in the neon glow and dirty alleyways, and the broken dreams outnumber the "successes" by a million to one margin.

Stuckism started with an insult, in which the conceptual artist Tracey Emin accused her artist boyfriend Billy Childish of being stuck (presumably because he was still painting, instead of producing installations, performances and videos).
Childish must have decided he was happy being stuck because, together with Charles Thomson, he founded the Stuckists.
The term Stuckism was coined by Thomson from a reference to the insult in Childish's poem.

With exhibition with titles like "The Triumph of Stuckism," they do seem to be trying awfully hard to talk themselves into their own superiority, or they're totally deluded.
Their paintings being what they are, the backlash generated by their antics is perhaps the only hope they have of getting anyone to look at them at all.
Stuckism seems like it was a "why not" idea that was both reactionary to the current climate in the art world of 1999 and possibly difficulties in a personal relationship.

Although Miss Emin has not done so badly out of Stuckism (using it paradoxically to further her career, whilst stealing a hell of a lot of ideas along the way) would it be fair to say you've played the Emin card with a knowledge that it'd roll in the publicity?
The ethos existed in the Medway Poets and was relaunched as Stuckism specifically to address the contemporary situation with the emphasis on visual art this time round.

Most of the members of the first thirteen-strong Stuckists group founded in 1999 by Thomson and Childish had been in collaboration for up to two decades previously, and in 1979 had formed The Medway Poets, which included later Stuckists Bill Lewis and Sexton Ming.
In 2004 outside the launch of The Triumph of Painting at the Saatchi Gallery they wore tall hats with Charles Saatchi's face on and carried placards claiming that Saatchi had copied their ideas.
In 2005 Sexton Ming left to concentrate on a solo career, and Charles Williams took on a non-exhibiting "associate" status.
