A studbook keeper is an individual who compiles and maintains a pedigree and demographic database on a group of animals (usually a specific taxon) in captivity.
The studbook keeper is the expert on, and the chronicler of, the story of a specific captive population of animals.
While the studbook keeper is not necessarily the foremost expert on the species' biology, its status in the wild, or its ecology, the studbook keeper is recognized by the zoological community as the first person to contact for information on the species.

This resulted in one studbook for the provinces Groningen (GrPS), Friesland (FrPS) and Drente (DrPS), combined to the NWP in 1942, and one studbook for the remaining eight provinces of the Netherlands, the NSTg, which was formed out of several smaller studbooks, one of them being the GPS or Gelderlander's Paarden Stamboek.
Studbooks tried to fulfill this requirement through selection within the breed, hereby bringing the light carriage horses, still in existence in NWP and Sgrt more to the front.
Studbook horses are then eligible for awards or predicates assigned according to the quality of the individual, and the quality and success of the offspring.

This studbook is the oldest in the Netherlands.
At the very start of the Studbook, on May 1st 1879, (the first studbook in the Netherlands) opinions differed whether only horses of the Friesian Race should be registered, or crossbreds as well.
Their assignment is to give advice about breeding, with a view to the restricted number of horses of the breed and the desire and necessity to keep as many different bloodlines as possible.

Friesland's studbook became the 'Friesian Horse Studbook' with two registries, the 'Inlands Ras' and the 'Buitenlands of Gekruistras.' The latter registry became the 'Bovenlands Ras' (breed of the Northern Provinces).
The studbook lost the distinction between the 'Inlands Ras' and 'Bovenlands Ras.' The decision was made to register both the Friesian horse and the Bovenlandse Paard in one studbook.

In order for a horse to be eligible to represent the Irish Sport Horse studbook at the World Breeding Championships for Young horses, it has to be registered in the Irish Horse Register, be by an IHR Approved stallion and have its dam documented on its passport.
Horses that have been registered with another studbook at birth and therefore do not have an IHR passport, or horses that are by an IHR Supplementary stallion, are not eligible for selection.
