The Studebaker Avanti was a sports coupe originally built by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, USA between June of 1962 and December of 1963.
Designed by a team of stylists employed by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the Avanti was all new on the surface and a radical design that is still appealing in the 21st century.
A second generation of Avanti automobile was styled by Tom Kellogg, one of the original Avanti design team members working for industrial designer Raymond Loewy, in the late 1980s.

The Studebaker brothers built hundreds of wagons for the North during the Civil War and by the time the United States was 100 years old, the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company was the largest producer of horse-drawn vehicles in the world.
Studebakers marketed during the late 'teens and early twenties used names like Big Six, Special Six, Light Six and Standard Six, but for the 1927 model year, these "generic" names were discontinued and the President, Commander and Dictator model names were introduced.

Posted - 04/05/2005 : 12:23:58 PM That number decodes as such: "R"= R1 Avanti engine - "K"=indicates month of October, "3" indicates 1963 and "21" is the 21st day of that month (October) If that engine had COME with a supercharger originally, the "R" would be replaced by "RS".
Starting with 64 tho, all of a given type of engine that was built on the same day would have carried the same exact number on these engines.
Consequently, ALL R1 Avanti engines that were built on October 21st of 1963 would carry the same serial number.
