The Champion, was a "clean-sheet" project, i.e., the engineers were not required to design around existing components, but allowed to produce an all-new car tailored to the needs and pocketbooks of moderate buyers.
When the Champion arrived in the showrooms it could be had with such options as the "Hill Holder," which applied the brakes when the clutch was depressed to hold the car on a hill, and overdrive, which reduced engine speed on the highway.
The Studebaker Champion name would continue to be used until replaced by the Lark in 1958.

I am in need of some help from anyone who might have rear interior pictures of a 47 champion 3 seater, also I have heard it called a gentleman's sedan or business man's coupe.
I have a 48 champion Business coupe, and everything is original...maby i can take a few pictures and post them for you....Or if your near Western Pennsylvania you can look for your self..

I just picked up a 1950 Studebaker Champion,,,the body is not to bad,it was origionaly from the U.S. and probably a west coaster.
I seem to recall that the only work he had to do to the car of any account was some modification of the trunk floor to accomodate something about the frame.
Studebaker body mounts are basically flat, and building a couple of mounts from what ever frame you decide on should be a piece-o-cake.

 My Car
This car was a Champion with the "Custom" trim option, and was the cheapest 4 door model that Studebaker made in 1951.
It therefore didn't have a lot of chrome or stainless on it and the only trim removed was the script on the front of the hood, the Studebaker emblem recessed in the front of the hood, and the bullet shaped handle/license plate light from the trunk.
I've lost track of how many times I have been told that they learned to drive in a car just like this, or that their parents or uncle had one just like it, except that it was green.

Looking past some of Studebaker’s more eclectic designs, one comes to realize that this independent manufacturer offered innovative engineering and styling that sometimes was too advanced for its own good.
The front of the Champion of course got the bullet nose, the rear featured a trunk that was nearly as long as the front, leading to the interminable Dr. Doolittle push-me-pull-you jokes.
Most likely because they were based on Studebaker’s low-cost Champion platform, Starlight Coupes are not to been found at the more prestigious auctions, with the exception of a few heavily modified street rod versions.
