While I am no Studebaker expert, not by a long shot, I would have to believe that those body shells were painted before the rear fenders were assembled on the cars (in fact, I believe I have seen pics from the factory floor showing the bodies painted, but without rear fenders attached.
In the case of your Studebaker, the body was painted before the rear quarters were bolted on.
I've seen way too many original cars of the era of the Studebaker in question here, and have learned that there were certain basic practices in assembly and painting cars (of any era, frankly) that were virtually "canon law" in the industry--for whatever reason.

The Land Cruiser body was dropped after a couple of years, but reappeared prior to WWII, with some unique touches but not the same radical design features as its 30s counterpart.
For 1961, the Cruiser sedan would debut, maintaining the spirit of the President and Land Cruiser lines in a more compact package- but its wheelbase of 113" was 4" longer than a standard Lark, and it came only with a V8 motor to further emphasise its prestige status.
My dad owned several Land Cruisers from the early fifties, and his particular favorite Studebaker, the one he was fondest of, was his 1950 Commander Starlight Coupe (the coupe with the unusual wraparound rear window).

That last blast from Studebaker was the Avanti that was introduced in 1963.
The last year that Studebaker was produced was 1966, although the Avanti continued to be built by an independent in South Bend, Indiana.
The car is vey interesting and has a personality of it's own, while I drive a couple of prewar cars the Studebaker continues to be my favorite.
