The Starlight body style was considered a halo model and was designated 5P (presumably Five Passenger to distinguish it from the Three Passenger Businessman's Coupe) by the independent automaker.
This version of the Starlight body style continued until the end of the 1952 model year when it was sold side by side with a hardtop version of the same models.
Studebaker sedans rode on an 116 in (2946.4 mm) wheelbase, although emphasis was placed on the sports car-like "Loewy" 2-door coupes that rode on Studebaker's longer 120 in (3048 mm) wheelbase.

It's what you could've done to this car if you were in 1956 and you wanted to hot rod it, with the dual carburetors and the dual exhaust and the split manifold.

Equally striking were the new Studebakers, with a fully enveloping body that increased the interior width of the passenger cabin, a flow- through wing line instead of bulbous bolton protrusions, a short bonnet, large glass area and long sweeping rear.
The most striking version was the two-door Starlight Coup, with its gunturret-like wraparound rear window which prompted wags to dub the styling "coming- orgoing".

That last blast from Studebaker was the Avanti that was introduced in 1963.
The last year that Studebaker was produced was 1966, although the Avanti continued to be built by an independent in South Bend, Indiana.
The car is vey interesting and has a personality of it's own, while I drive a couple of prewar cars the Studebaker continues to be my favorite.

Posted - 02/25/2005 : 2:03:37 PM Being a 1949 Champion Regal DeLuxe Starlight (8G C5), your car is the 3299th body of that model, out of a total of 8982.
The 5499 number that you quote is for the Champion DeLuxe Starlight (7G C3), not the Regal DeLuxe that you have.
I've got TOO MANY Studebaker project vehicles here and my primary focus at the moment is the 1953 Commander Coupe I found last May. I hope to be able to drive it to the SDC International meet in Spokane Washington, this coming August.
