Incorporating Student Voice into Teaching Practice
In some classrooms, student voices are barely heard; the teacher monopolizes classroom talk, and knowledge is treated as residing entirely with the teacher.
This approach, as framed by many of its exponents, encourages the emergence of a written form of student voice: student writers' expression of ideas that matter to them, and their use of language and style that convey their engagement.
Building on what students know, a principle that characterizes the approaches to curriculum negotiation and dialogic teaching discussed earlier, is also described by Ladson-Billings (1994) as a key component of "culturally relevant teaching." In a multicultural context, incorporating students' knowledge is likely to entail addressing certain relationships within and outside the classroom.

 Importance of Student Voice
Students learn new skills from their involvement in school improvement and restructuring efforts: to communicate effectively with teachers, to confront and address difficult problems, to work effectively in teams, and to set and accomplish improvement goals (Furtwengler, 1991).
Once students realize their voices are heard, they usually become more committed to-and interested in- improving their school.
When students are included in improvement efforts, schools report notable improvement in attendance and discipline, a decline in dropout rates, and improved communication between students and teachers.
