Drunk driving rates for fatal crashes in 2000 were highest for motorcycle operators (27%) and lowest for drivers of large trucks (1%).
The highest rates of drunk driving in fatal crashes in 2000 were recorded for drivers 21-24 years old (27%), followed by ages 25-34 (24%) and 35-44 (22%).

 Paly Voice: View Feedback for "Students Against Drunk Driving club raises awareness at Paly"
Paly graduate Katie Krummel started the SADD club in 2000, and over the past four years the club has grown in numbers and increased the awareness of the severity of drunk driving.
According to SADD club president Maggie Krummel, the club's short-term goal for the rest of the school year is to keep everyone aware of the dangers of drunk driving.
Krummel, along with other students in SADD club, believes that part of the reason for drunk driving in high school is that members of the Paly community, especially parents, are unrealistic about teenage drinking.

S.A.D.D. is a student-run organization that has the objective of reducing drunk driving as much as possible.
Sarah Stowers, current president of S.A.D.D, gave an excellent speech at the homecoming assembly, and perhaps that was a helpful factor in making some people who might not have thought about it otherwise to refrain from taking unnecessary risks.

In the 1980s, S.A.D.D. was a multicomponent, school and community-based program to prevent DWI and RWID among high school students.
The curriculum stressed the unpleasant consequences of DWI including loss of driving privileges and legal "hassle." In addition, students were taught methods to intervene with a friend who is too impaired to drive and were given practice in using these skills in role-playing situations.
The 1980s Contract for Life stipulated that the student would call a parent if he/she had been drinking or the person responsible for driving had been drinking, and that the parent would either pick the student up or provide taxi fare and discuss the matter at a later date.

Thank goodness that as he and his two teenage passengers got into a car - and avoided putting on their seatbelts, and drove way over the speed limit, and crashed into a tree, and died of head and neck injuries - none of them had any alcohol in their systems.

Bonnie Schmitt testified she was in SADD because she did not think it was fair for drunk drivers to get away with killing innocent people.  They wanted to lower the blood alcohol from.10 to.08 so the drunk drivers would have a quicker response system.
Ramirez answered they made posters for the school and at lunch time they circulated petitions, which was announced in the morning so students could sign the petition, and in answer to Senator James' further question, said they tried to educate the students about drunk driving.
Senator James thanked the members of the committee for their patience in listening to the students from SADD, and stated he believed it was a good experience for the young people.

Waikato students from as far as Taupo will be meeting at Matamata later this month to get serious about the concept of Students Against Driving Drunk.
