The Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) was formed in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh state, in April 1977.
Inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran, it stood for radical social change in India, an approach not appreciated by the leadership of JIH.
SIMI have been influenced by Deobandi Islam which is a Sufi muslim revivalist movement that started in India in 1879, it is perhaps most famous in the west as the philosophy of the past Taleban government in Afganistan.

The Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), proscribed under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 (POTA), is an Islamist fundamentalist organization, which advocates the ‘liberation of India’ by converting it to an Islamic land.
Students up to the age of 30 years are eligible to be its members and after completing this age-limit they retire from the organization.
June 11: All eight accused in the Ghatkopar blast case, allegedly cadres of the SIMI, are acquitted by a POTA court in Mumbai due to lack of evidence.

While the emergence of AIMSF was to strengthen movement for Pakistan, the SIMI was born to carry forward the legacy of Indian Islamic Movement launched by Muslim thinkers from Shah Waliullah to Maulana Maududi and to complete their unfinished agenda of establishing Islamic rule in the country.
In contemporary India it is also the responsibility of the present generation of Muslim students to give a wake up call to their co-religionists for developing a twenty-first century mindset, which does not approve religious hegemony of any community.

It is also alleged that 12 SIMI cadres, some of them students at the Aligarh Muslim University had abducted and tortured a Deputy Superintendent of Police attached with the local branch of the Intelligence Bureau.
Mohammad Aquil, a former student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and an active member of the SIMI was arrested by the UP Police in a bomb blast case, which occurred on August 15, 2000 in the Sabarmati Express near Faizabad.

In fact, in May, after the last bombing, the police commissioner himself said that the Gateway of India was one of the possible targets and it was expected, it's just that things had kind of settled down.
There's this fringe of Islamic militants, home-grown, some of them the police say have got training in Pakistan as well, but we know that the core group is all home-grown.
